Can On Inherit Syphilis?
A young woman writes, ter
ribly upset and almost sui
cidal because a doctor has
told her that a blood test has
shown that she has syphilis.
The impression the girl has
is that she inherited it from
her father by way of her
mother.
This, of course, is possible,
but in the
last 50 years
since Salvar
san came into
use, I have
seen only a

herited. In those few cases
usually the cornea (window
of the bye) was slightly frost-'
cd. In those, cases, also, I was
able to show that the young
person's mother had a positive
blood test for syphilis. Often,
also, in those cases I could
got a history that the mother
had had a series of stillborn
infants before a child was
born who lived.
The thought that first came
to me as I read this unhappy
girl's letter was, "Did the doc
tor have the test repeated In
at least two other laborato
ries?" I can remember a number
of cases in which a lovely
woman was flattened by such
a blow, and yet I was , able
quickly to show that when
the test as repealed in at
least to laboratories it showed
nothing wrong.
'False-Positive-' Result
In some cases either t h c
test was in error or the girl
had a blood which gave what
is called a "false-positive" re
sult. Such a. result can be due
to the presence in the woman
of one ot several diseases
which will sometimes give a
syphilis-like reaction. In these
cuscs I always refer the pa
tient to an expert on syphilis
who will have a number of
tests made. Often by looking
least two laboratories it show
ed nothing wrong.
Today, there is a special
test available for the presence
of the spirochete that causes
syphilis, and this has brought
groat comfort to many per
sons who, after many testings
with the old technics, had
been left in a most unhappy
state of anxiety.
One of the awful things
that happens in many cases
is that once the doctor has
blurted out to a lovely woman
his opinion that she has syph
ilis, no amount of showing
her that a laboratory mistake
was made will ever make her
feel quite clean again.
So far I have been talking
about women who have al
ways been chaste. The woman
who has had several lovers
can easily have contracted
syphilis without ever know-

me. First, she should go per
haps to a nearby medical
school where, in the depart
ment of syphilology, she can
have a number of different
tests made such as the Kline,
the Kahn, the Hinton, and the
Kolmer Wassermann. Then, if
any doubt remains, she should
have two of the new, more
definite tests made. Also, if
the doctors think it necessary,
the mother and father, if they
are living, can be tested.
If the tests should indicate
that syphilis is really present,
then the girl should have ex
pert treatment with penicillin.
If, with this, her blood reac
tion quickly changes to nor
mal, she can feel happy again.
