Briscoe, Ashland
Mrs. Doris Lassen's first
grade children have been
studying about weather. They
drew a mural to illustrate
what makes rain. They called
it "Three Little Raindrops."
They wrote stories about wind
and rain which they made in
to booklets, and they also kept
a record of temperature
changes.
In music the children com
posed an original Valentine
song.
New room officers are
Candy Decker, president; Vic
ki Platko, vice president;
Glenn Swinford, secretary;
and Chuck Wiley, room rep
resentative. Students in Mrs. Marsha
Ferte's room made a post of-
fice for mailing their Valen
tines. It was complete with
"room routes".' and a life size
postman sitting beside it. They
had "mail delivery" at their
Valentine party Feb. 14.
Donna Duncan is the new
president in Mrs. Gloria
Thorpe's third grade. Ethel
Kneebone is the new vice
president, and Sharon Morris
is the newly elected secretary.

On Feb. 10, the fourth grade
boys and girls of Room 5 held
an open house for their par
ents to explain what they
have been learning in social
studies and science. Many
parents attended the open
house.
The . fourth grade reading
classes in Room 5 came togeth
er to observe Abraham Lin
coln's birthday. Information
and pictures were shared by
Vicki Fredrick, Wesley Lewis,
Gary Slack, Leslie Houk and
Gordon Hester.
A. two act play was given
by eleven pupils. Act I,
"When Lincoln Was A Boy,"
was presented by Robert
Hamilton, G 1 e n d a Alford,
Mary Heinzman, David
Schweizer and Bobby Jack
son. Geanie Ledbetter was the
announcer for Act I.
Roger Boyce, Dennis Lev
ison, Tom Cullop, Carl Hille
stad and Debbie McNeill were
the characters in Act II,

Rogue River High
Earl Bowen, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Glen R. Bowen, route
1, box 167, Rogue River, and
Mary Watson, daughter of Mr,

have been accepted for the
fall term at Oregon State col
lege. Both students had above a
B grade point average.

in track and football and has
served as class president and
president of the Lettermen's
club.
Mary plans to study home
economics at college with a
specialty in interior decorat
ing. She has also been active
in 4-H and school activities.
She has held both class and
student body offices and has
participated in home econom
ic and music groups.
The Future Homemakers of
America sponsored the annual
Sweetheart's ball recently in
the Rogue River school cafe
teria. The theme of the dance
was "Young Love." N
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Oliver
provided the music at the
dance by donating their stere
ophonic set for the evening.
Forty - five couples attended
the dance. At intermission,
senior candidates Jerry Kite
and Dani Liles were crowned
king and queen.
Terry Gail, student body
president, recently . attended
the state 4-H "Know your
state government confer
ences" in Salem. Terry was
one of two Jackson county
students to attend the confer
ences, the other being Alice
Woolfolk of Eagle Point.
Terry was named first alter
nate to attend the national
4-H conference in Washington,
D.C., during April. Two boys
and two girls were selected
to attend.
Tuesday morning the Rogue
River High school band enter
tained students with a dress
rehearsal of ' the band and
chorus program which was
presented at Illinois Valley
High school Wednesday. This
is the second 'year that the
two schools have exchanged
music programs.
Griffin Creek School
Barry Bigham of the Pacific
Telephone company presented
the Safety Patrol and the stu
dent body with a safety award
in an assembly recently. This
is the second National Safety
Council Award that Griffin
Creek has been awarded.

The girls' volley ball team
has won three games. They
have defeated Jacksonville,
Lone Pine and Howard. Their
schedule for the remainder of
the season is, Lone Pine, Feb.
21; Jacksonville, Feb. 28; and
Howard, March 7.
The girls on the team are
Pat Eastwood, Zellah Mason,
Sharon Forsyth, Janet Burke,
Pam Gideon, Susan Bailey,
Pat Hardesty, Jane Dussault,
Kathy Haertle, Sheila Shock
ley, Paula Minear, Donalyn
Minear, and Linda Eckel. Miss
Pat Leek is the coach.
A volley ball intramural
tournament has been played
during the noon hour. The
teams were the Hornets, Wild
cats, Tigers, Panthers, Pound
ers and Cyclones. The Wild
cats won the tournament,
Players picked from the other
teams then played the Wild
cats. The winner of this game,
the All-Stars, played the
teachers. With lots of luck and
sore muscles the teachers man
aged to win two out of three
games from the All-Stars.
Mrs. Myrna Frink was one
of the principals of Medford
schools to attend the legisla
ture on the basic school fund.
She returned Friday, Feb. 17.
-A party was given by Mrs.
Harriett Eitemiller honoring
the school librarians. The li
brarians worked puzzles us
ino the names of library books
and prizes were given. Mrs.
Eitemiller baked ana servea
all with a chocolate cake.

Griffin Creek basketball
team will play Jacksonville
Feb. 23 at home. This will be
the final game of the season.
Basketball awards will be pre
sented early in March.
Several loads of gravel have
been scattered in the court
and around the much used
tether-balls.
Dental week was observed
by the entire student body
with a special assembly where
a movie "It's Your Health".;
was shown. This movie, which
was presented to Griffin
Creek school by Dr. V. Good
rich, who lived in the district,
has been placed in the Jack
son county curriculum center
for the use of all schools.

Howard School
Mrs. Evelyn WInnlngham's
first grade room took pictures
of their January art work and
bulletin boards, then began
making decorations for Feb
ruary. We made Valentine boxes
and planned a party. We are
also learning why people still
remember Washington and
Lincoln. We have also talked
about our own state's birthday
this month.
We are planning a trip to
the airport Feb. 20. There we
will visit the control tower,
the - weather bureau and the
United Airlines office.-
Ronnie Miller is anew
pupil in Miss Mary Klocker's
room. Pamela Bryant has
moved to Glide, Ore.
Our class heard Mr. Pierce
speak to us about his trip to
Antarctica. He showed us
slides and a stuffed penguin
he brought back.
We had a big Valentine
train with a box car for each
child on our bulletin board
The cars are our Valentine
mailboxes. Our valentine
party was Valentine day.
In Mrs. Dorothy Arney's
room, we planted hyacinth
bulbs in milk cartons.
On Jan. 27. Mr. and Mrs.
A. C. Pierce told us about
Pengums and displayed a
stuffed penguin. Pierce show
ed pictures and told about his
trip to Antarctica.
We have a new girl in our
room. Her name is Janice
Hickey. She has been in school
in California. Bobbie Rose
moved to Central Point.

We remember George Wash
ington and Abraham Lincoln's
birthdays. We had a Valen
tine Party. Our Room Moth
ers brought us a treat. We
made Valentines.
In Mrs. Huldah Fisher's
third grade room we have two
tadpoles. We are watching
them turn into frogs. They
each have two hind legs now,
but they still have their long
tan.
Instead of having a Valen
tine box this year, we made a
post office.
Jimmy Dusenbury brought
his two pet rats to school. He

black.
In Mrs. Audrey Berry's
room we have been studying
about electricity and magnets
in our science class. We used
a dry cell and found out that
electricity follows a pathway.
We experimented with a mag
net and found out that it will
pick up only certain things.
We learned about the poles
and how they act with each
other.
We made a Valentine girl
for our mothers and a boy for
our fathers. They are made of
different sized hearts cut
from red and white paper.

Besides the game with Pros
pect which the Crusaders won,
Student Government Day elec
tions were another highlight
of last week.
On Wednesday, Feb. 15,
speeches were given during a
sixth period assembly by the
seniors running for a city of
fice. The entire, student body
turned out for the voting on
Thursday and elected Anne
Bennett, city attorney; Florian
Shasky, assistant school super
intendent; Bryan von Buskirk,
councilman of Ward I; and
Michael Lewis, police captain.
They will attend various civic
functions and will meet their
counterparts Thursday. Feb.
23, along with representatives
elected from other county
high schools.
On Student Government
Day the students will be reg
istered in the morning, admin
istered oaths of office, and
briefed on local government.
In the afternoon the student's
time will be spent with his
official counterpart. The day
will be completed with a ban
quet at the Elks lodge. -
As part of the National
School assembly programs,
Mr. Bogardus presented
"Characters in Clay," an in
teresting and unique feature
on clay sculpturing Friday.
After the basketball eame
with Sacred Heart school of
Klamath Falls Sunday, Feb.
19, a dinner was given for tne
st Marv's and Sacred Heart
students. It was catered by
Russ Simons of the Holly cafe
and served at St. Mary's gym
nasium. This traditional affair
is held after both of the bas
ketball games between the
schools.
Crater High School

the junior-senior prom qom
menced last week with the
selection of the major com
mittee chairmen for the an
nual event scheduled May 20.
Virginia Wilson and Gary
Meade have been named gen
eral chairmen, and ; Danny
Hays will serve as coordi
nating chairman.
Other chairmen chosen to
begin their committees are
Bev Klimko, and All Prilli
man, decorations; and Law
rence Roberts and John
Champ, construction. More
appointments will be made
during the following week
for the program and enter
tainment, booklet, refresh
ments, lighting, card tables,
ceiling and queen committee
chairmen.
After the Friday night
wrestling matches with Ash
land high school, the Girls
Athletic , association sponsor
ed an informal Valentine
dance. This was a new twist
in informal dances at Crater,
the first ever held following
a wrestling meet. GAA mem
bers decorated the cafetorium
Valentine style.
Lee Hamilton headed the
decoration committee chair
men appointed by president,
Judy Kimmey. - They were
admission, Judy Gebhard and
Karen Holley; refreshments,
Nikki Hammond; clean-up,
Sharon Issaacs.
Jan.. 27-28, 19 members of
the Crater High speech squad
attended the invitat i o n a I
speech tournament at SOC.
Divisions of c o m p e t i tion
were: impromptu, poetry
reading, after dinner speak
ing and radio speaking. Each
school was allowed a maxi
mum of four contestants in
each category except for one
in ADS.
No winners were chosen in
each event, rather critique
sheets were issued to all con
testants for their own use
Judges were competed of
professors, housewives, radio
announcers, pastors and other
faculty members.

the seniors' correct names
that will be engraved on their
diplomas.
The senior class also spon
sored the dance after the
Medford-Crater game, Feb. 3,
in the cafeteria. The proceeds
of the dance went to the sen
ior class.
