active thyroid gland or small
goiter simply by feeling the
patient's skin and noticing
that it feels feverish. The skin
often is red; the pulse is fast;
the eyes may be a bit promi
nent or starey; in spite of
eating much, the person may
have lost weight; he probably
is sleeping poorly; he is rest
less; he is blinking his eyes;
he feels too warm and hence
wants to throw open windows
and kick off bed-clothes; he
may be cantankerous; and he
may , suffer from diarrhea.
Then he probably can be
cured with an operation on
his thyroid gland.
Nervousness Blamed
Another cause for heavy
sweating can be nervousness.
I have known very tense min
isters who told me that at the
close of their sermon they
would be so wet all over they
had to take a bath and change
their clothes. I have known
a few persons who sweated
heavily from just their head
and neck - especially after
singing in public.
Many highly nervous or
psychotic persons suffer from
cold, dripping-wet hands. I
remember girls who could
hardly work as a secretary
because they could not handle
letters without getting them
wet,
Danger From Plastic Bags
;I often marvel how some
people can get information so
mixed up. Women now write
asking me if plastic bags kill
children because they have
been in contact with certain
foods, or because they have
been frozen in the refriger
ator. One woman thinks that
the danger comes from "the
perspiration" that forms on
the bag when it has been in
the refrigerator.
1 Actually, the danger of the
thin, plastic material is that
a child will get it stuck to his
face so that it will complete
ly block the flow of air
through his nose and mouth.
If a small child hasn't sense
enough or "strength enough to
pull the thin film of plastic off
his face, he will soon be dead
from suffocation. What this
means is that mothers must be
careful to keep their children
