Adverse Possession Changes
Boundary Line
'Asa and Bob are next-door
neighbors. In 1941 Asa plant
ed a hedge along what he
thought was the boundary
line between his lot and Bob's
lot. The hedge was in fact
located on Bob's land eight
feet from the true boundary.
Asa treated all ot the land
up to the hedge as part ot
his lawn from 1940 to 1961.
In 1961, Bob, after learning
about the location of the or
iginal true line from a survi
vor, decided to tear out the
hedge. Can Asa prevent Bob
irom removing the hedge?

THE COURT HELD: Asa
has acquired eight feet of
Bob's lot by adverse poss
ession and the hedge now
forms the boundary between
the two lots. Therefore, at
Asa's requests the court en
joined Bob from removing
the hedge. A person acquires
title to land when he posses
ses and claims title to it foi
a prescribed period. The per
iod is set by state law and
varies from five to 20 years.

button travel on rain
bow colored freeways may
be closer than you think, but
just how close is up to the
California legislature.
Assemblyman Nichols C,
Petris (D-Oakland) has intro
duced bills that would require
a push button speed control
system in every car. The but
tons, - all different colors,
would activate a governor to
hold the car in any one of
five speed ranges between
zero and 65 miles an hour.
Lights Tell Speed
Matching colored lights at
front and rear of the auto
mobile would tell other mo
torists and police how fast
it was going. Speed zones
and highway lanes would be
covered with luminous paint
in the same color scheme,
Petris said.
The colors would be as fol
lows: Red to 15 miles an hour,
green to 25, yellow to 40, blue
to 55 and white to 85.
Petris said the idea belong
ed to Nicholas Demetry of
Oakland, who announced it
publicly in 1957 with a letter
to the President of the United
States, Since then Petris con
tinued, Demetry has travelled
over the nation talking with
safety experts, government of
ficials and newspaper editors.

One of the blessings of mar
ried life is a wife who has the
habit of interrupting her hus
band, when he's reading, to
read something to him from
whatever it is she's reading.
It's even more rewarding if,

though something may be lost
in clarity.
The other evening I was
curler up with "The Rise and
Fall of the Third Reich" when
my wife Interrupted, She was
curled up with some maga
zine, "The latest thing in psy
chiatry," she said, "-oh! were
you reading?" ,
"No," I said, "I was just
looking for pictures of atro
cities. There don't seem to be
any."
"Family therapy," she said.
"It's the newest thing in psy
chiatric treatment. The whole
family has analysis, instead of
only the person who's ill.
There's an article here about
it."

"We can't afford it," I said.
"We still owe the orthodon
tist."
"The nsvchiatrist has to
analyze all the members of
the family to understand their
interactions," she explained.
"It tells about this family that
had therapy. A mother and
father and daughter."
"What was their trouble?"
I asked.
"The father was an adver
tising agenpy man," she said.
The mother was overade-
nimiB. The father was too
passive. The daughter had an
overattachment to the motn-er."
"So thev all went to the
psychiatrist as a package?" I
isked.
"Yes." she said. "Their
problems were inter - related.
The mother ana daughter
blamed each other for every
thing Thev foufiht viciously.
They couldn't disengage,"
- "Why didn't the atner
knock some sense in their
heads?" ,

"He was merely a spectator.
His agency was slipping, and
he came down with colitis. He
felt more inadequate than
ever."
"Poor devil," I said, "How'd
it all work out?"
"It took over two years
she went on. "Finally the
daughter managed to disen
gage from the mother."
"Disengage?"
"Yes. She moved out of the
house and got her own little
place."
"Good for her," I said.
Somehow I had sensed that
was the answer to the whole
trouble. "How'd the folks take
that?"
"At first the mother was
hysterical. But she got over
it. She ran away on a vacation
by herself. The - father was
calm at first. But then he got
sick. He got well at a conven
tion. Eventually the mother
and father re-engaged,
"And they're ait happy
now?" .
"Not exactly happy. The
mother and daughter aren't
completely disengaged, and
the the mother and father
aren't completely re-engaged.
They don't quite trust each
other. But they're making
progress. The daughter has a
Job."
"And they've all given up
the psychiatrist?"
"Oh, no. They all still go to

McJWinnville - A $300,000
expansion program for North
up library on the Linfield col
lege campus has been an
nounced by Dr. Harry L,
Dillin, Linfield president.
Plans call for expansion of
the present 10,400 square feel
of space by another 18,000
square feet. The three story
addition will be built on the
back of the present building.
Dr. Diliin said that in addi
tion to some funds now avail
able, plans are being made to
finance the addition through
a campaign among Interested
givers and that applications
were being made to four foun
dations, one of which already
has given $13,000,
