More space stuff:
Having apparently got one
on the way, Russia is plan
ning to launch MORE rockets
to Venus. Dr. Alexander Mar
kov, writing in the Soviet
newspaper K o m somolskaya,
says:
"The three-quarter-ton lab
oratory now speeding toward
Venus ushers in an era of
interplanetary flights. There
is no doubt that after this
first rocket others carrying
automatic instruments will be
sent to Venus. They will
transmit back to the earth in
formation about the atmos
phere of Venus, the composi
tion of its surface, its flora
and fauna, if flora and fauna
(meaning plants and animals)
exist on this mysterious
planet."
Alexander Newsmenov,
president of the Soviet Acad
emy of Sciences, says in a
Pravda interview: "The day
is drawing near when man
will EXPLORE and DE
VELOP planets."
WEIRD?
Wild and woolly?
Certainly. But so was Co
lumbus' project to sail west
ward into the horizon into
the unknown seas in an effort
to find a short and simple
and relatively inexpensive
route to the wealth of the
Indies.
Everything considered - in
cluding man's vastly in
creased KNOWLEDGE-it is
at least arguable that the
idea of space exploration is
no more fantastic in these
days than was Columbus' idea
of sailing around the world
nearly five centuries ago.
NOTE:
Columbus wasn't trying
to prove that the world is
round, as so often is said.
Back in the 15th century ed
ucated people KNEW the
world was round. Columbus
was an educated man-self-educated,
but still WELL edu
cated for his day-and he
knew the world was round.
His men trusted his knowl
edge. But, after all, they
were going farther out of
sight of land than man had
ever gone before - and that
took courage.
Probably as much courage
as space travel takes now.
OEARCHING question:
Will Russia LEAD THE
WORLD in this business of
space exploration - as she
seems to be doing so far?
IF so, WHY? .
We once led the world
in scientific and mechanical
progress. Could it be that we
are slipping-ever so slightly,
but still slipping-away from
that position we once held?
Could it be that we are be
coming so intrigued with the
idea of cradle to the grave
SECURITY that we are losing
our interest . in pioneering?
That is a grave question.
It deserves a lot of thought.
Nelson Elected
YMCA President
At Board Meeting
Robert Nelson, Medford was
elected president of the Med
ford YMCA board of directors
Tuesday night.
Nelson has been active in
committee work in the YMCA
for two years. He succeeds
J. D. Pierce, 694 South Mo
doc avc., who served as board
president for the past two
years.
Other officers Include W. J.
Williams, first vice president;
Charles Fox, second vice pres
ident; Mrs. Scott Wickersham,
secretary; and Larry Clark,
treasurer.
Four men were elected trus
tees, who with the officers
make up the board of trustees.
They were M. O. Bessonette,
Carl Brophy, Wayne Struble
and Pierce.
The Medford Young Men's
Christian association is a non
profit corporation owned and
operated by the people of the
Rogue valley who are mem
bers, it was explained. The
27 directors make policy and
determine programs and serv
ices and promote facilities
which are used by the entire
community for a variety of
programs from PTA assem
blies to craft classes.
Bulk of the Y program is
centered in the physical edu
cation department with a mod
ern swimming and aquatic
urogram, and health condi
ing program for both boys and
girls and men and women.
The program for youth
members through their phys
ical and club activities is sub
sidized by the United Medford
Crusade each year.
