Weed Trees, Brush
Reduce Production
Capacity of Lands
Corvallis - Weed trees and
brush are reducing the pro
duction capacity of more than
60 per cent of the forest lands
of western Oregon at present,
but research with chemical
controls by the Oregon State
college school of forestry show
promise for greatly reducing
that loss in years ahead.
Results obtained with re
cently developed herbicides
indicate that control of vine
maple and bigleaf maple - the
most noxious "weed" trees on
western Oregon timber lands
- may become possible on an
ecnomical basis.
Improved controls for snow
brush, ; madrone, and elder
berry have been developed
too in the research studies.
Adequate controls for poison
oak and blackberry have not
yet been found, however.
The report on research
comes from Dr. George
Barnes, assistant director of
the OSC forest research di
vision, and Michael Newton,
research forester.
Not Easily Killed
Large maples are not easily
killed by aerial sprays with
current methods and chemi
cals. Individual stem treat
ments on large bigleaf maple
have given good results, how
ever, when 2,4,5-TP chemical,
in a diesel oil carrier, was
used as a basal spray. Treat
ments applied between April
and September met with con
siderable success, the research
ers reported.
Vine maple of small size
was killed back to the ground
by four pounds per acre of
2,4,5-T applied aerially.
Oregon white oak has been
subjected to many of the same
treatments used on maple.
Sensitivity of the two species
differs considerably, however,
it was found. The most prac
tical treatment on oak has
been 2,4-D amine in axe cuts.
Further study of tree physi
ology, metabolism and trans
location should eventually
lead to methods of treating
large trees aerially on a prac
tical basis, Barnes and New
ton believe. They also see the
day "close at hand" when
brush fields can be completely
controlled by a single spray
application.
