The season of Lent recalls
to our minds that Jesus
Christ, the Son of God, calls
all men to prayer and pen
ance. The Catholic church
teaches that sin is an offense
against the Divine Majesty,
and merits punishment not
only in this world, but In the
world to come.
Yet in spite of our unfaith
fulness and numberless sins,
a merciful God has decreed
that if we pray, fast and do
penance we may atone for
our sins, and obtain pardon.
Moreover in His bountiful
goodness there is no limit to
His generosity.
Before beginning His pub
lic ministry Our Blessed
Lord retired to the desert to s
pray and fast for forty days
and nights. In this He set a
pattern for us, "unless you do
penance, you shall all like
wise perish."
The Church repeating the
self-same words of the Divine
Teacher urges all to turn
awny from their sinful ways
and to turn back to God
through atonement, mortifica
tion and prayer.
This then is the will of God
that all men may be saved.
For this purpose came Christ
Into the world for this He
died upon the cross that we
may have life eternal life.
Hearken then to the Lord
speaking through the pro
phot, Joel: "Be converted to
Me with all your heart, in
fasting, and in weeping, and
in mourning: and rend your
hearts and turn to the Lord
your God." (Joel II, v 12, 13). :
The daytime of life Is short
eternity is long.
Camp Fire Girls
Lose Union Help
Portland -(UPD The Camp
Fire Girl's annual candy
sale will be carried on here
this year without union sup
port. Camp Fire Girls' spokes
men said the sale is victim of
a "provincially" inspired
boycott because the girls are
buying their candy from a
California firm.
Austin J. Haughey, direc
tor of the Union Label Com
mittee, said the girls' organi
zation is not on a list of any
kind.
"We're just not buying
their candy. They're not 'list
ed' anywhere, though," he
said.
Haughey said that before
the committee always put on
a display for the girls and
called the ladies auxiliary to
help.
"Now," he said, "I'm just,
not advertising them at all.
They're taking Oregon money
to California and putting a lot
of people out of work in Port
land." Betty Sale, executive di
rector of the Portland Area
Council, said that some 9,000
Camp Fire, Bluebird and -K
Horizon girls are prepared
to start their candy sale April
13.
The California firm, she
said, now sells to about 70
Camp Fire councils in the
United States and bid one-and-one-half
cents cheaper
per box than other com
