How to Display a Porpoise:
First, You Catch Him
We, who planned on t h e
capture of live porpoises for
later public display, were se
verely handicapped; the ani
mals we were after were about
as intelligent as we. In fact,
in their own environment they
were even smarter. .
Another handicap we were
harnessed with was our af
fection for these animals; if
there was the slightest possi
bility of Inflicting physical
discomfort on them, we were
determined to abandon the en
tire procedure.
Easiest Way
And, of course, being typi
cally human and, we hoped,
modern, we also wanted to
complete the capture in the
easiest possible way - so we
made plans. "Very simple,"
many fishermen and water
front advisers told us. "Sim
ply catch the porpoises up a
narrow-mouthed creek or in
let, block the entrance with
a boat or two and wait for
the ebb tide." Sounded sim
ple, so we tried it.
The porpoises seemed to
know what we were trying to
do before we had the boat
blockade in place. But to al
low our human ego to fully
blossom, they respectfully
waited for us. The tide ebbed.
With smug satisfaction and
our built-in human conceit in
tact, we waited, boats in place.
There were two porpoises
up the creek. We watched
them come toward us, not fast
but just cruising along at a
comfortable speed. We smiled
in satisfied optimism. Human
like, we were about to dem
onstrate again our superior in
telligence over the lower
beasts. '
The two animals arrived at
a point a few feet from the
boat barricade, came quickly
up from a dive and sailed
through the air in a graceful
arch over the boats; flipped
their tails disdainfully and
plowed away toward the hori
zon. The "very simple trick"
had failed.
Like Steel Trap
More conferences, more
plans, more advice from those
who were still uninformed.
Tail clamps" were hard to
come by, so we had a set
made; two large padded Jaws,
I triggered In between with a
I metal plate and held together
with a strong spring like a
steel trap, only larger, and
without pain to the animal
caused by iron jaws. ,
Getting close to the animals
at sea was easy; we could ap
proach within a few feet of
the friendly things. The "tall
clamp" was clumsy, and we
were forever getting tangled
in the long rope that was af
fixed to it. ,
Resetting the jaws of the
gadget one afternoon, shortly
after we had unsuccessfully
latched onto a porpoise tail,
our attention was attracted by
two large porpoises a couple
of hundred feet off the port
bow, standing on their tails,
their bodies hanging in the
air. They were watching us.
Suddenly we got the mes
sage; they were outsmarting
us; they were figuring out the
program. To them we prob
ably looked pretty silly. Some
how, what someone once said
when they observed, "If the
porpoises had been endowed
by Nature with an opposable
thumb they would have ruled
the seas" took on a new meaning.
Water Supply in
