Old people in a family home
sometimes constitute a prob
lem and in some cases the
fault is main-
ly with the
old people
who tend to
give orders to
their children
and grandchil
d r e n, or to
protest against
some o
the things
they do. I re
member an old . couple who,
because of their straight-laced
up-bringing, could not keep
from scolding their son-in-law
for having two cocktails be
fore supper, playing poker
with his friends Saturday
night, and going fishing on
the Sabbath! The old people
could not help objecting to
the loud noise that their
grandchildren loved. Even
when studying in the eve
ning, the children kept the
phonograph playing jazz as
loudly as it could go. When

schools participating at Ore
gon State college Feb. 11 in a
program of high school prin
cipal interviews with local
students now attending the
college.
Medford High s representa
tives in the special program
will be Miss Josephine Kirtly,
vice principal, and Alex Mc
Donald, counselor.
Under the program, school
principals or counselors have

the strong and weak points in
both high school offerings and
the college orientation and
counseling work for new stu
dents.
Following Interviews, prin
cipals and college leaders
meet to review comments and
recommendations of the stu
dents. The reports In the past
years have brought changes
and improvements in some as
pects of both college prepara
tory programs in Oregon high
schools and in OSC counseling
programs designed to help
students get off to a success
ful start in college. '

OSC started the interviews
on an eight-school basis, but
favorable comments from stu
dents and principals have
brought expansion of the in
terview program each year.

feeble-minded nonentities.
Mrs. Shelton McKean, in a
recent article, said that when
her parents came to live with
her, she found that the essen
tial thing was to show them
much love and affection; to
give them no commands, and
to avoid fussing over them.
She tried to make them feel
that they were a part of the
family group and not' just
boarders. She would not treat
her parents as If they were
feeble-minded and unwelcome
guests. She thought she had
learned to make her parents
happy in the home. s

If grandfather wants to care
for the lawn or wants to
shovel snow in the winter he

and be thanked for it. Often
the daughter will not let him
do anything for fear the neigh
bors will say, "Look, that
woman is so tight she forces
her poor old father to work
for his board and lodging!"
As Mrs. McKean said in con
clusion, "In my treatment of
my own parents I hope to set
an example for my children's
conduct toward me when some
day I may live with them. I
don't want ever to be a prob
lem to them." Most studies to
day show that old folks would
much rather have their own
little apartment than to live
with their children. Often they
like to live near a child, but
not in his or her house.
