into the garden, or down town
to the public library, was very
cruel, and designed to force
even a normal person into im
becility. Imagine hundreds of
people forced just to sit
around all day, doing nothing.

Fortunately, as I keep say
ing In this column, many au
thorities now are working
hard to make the care of the
psychotic person much kinder,
more sensible, and more help
ful. Some books and articles by
former patients of British
mental hospitals, reveal how
cruel, unjust and stupid the
handling of the insane still can
be in England. The. writers
state that if a mildly psychotic
person who could easily live
out in the world has no family
to whom he can be paroled,
he may have to "rot" in the
Asylum for the rest of his
days. This situation must be
changed.
Tired Mother Syndrome -
As I said here a while ago,
many a time a doctor will see
a woman who feels very tired,
worn down, nervous and irri
table. Often she says she
screams at her children and
her innocent husband, and
this distresses her because she
knows she shouldn't be doing
it. Often she says that for
months she hasn't had enough
sleep. She has constantly to
push herself to work. Usually,
when the doctor examines her,
he can't find anything physi
cally wrong. Often he feels
like saying, if you could only
get a week's good sleep, and
a little vacation you'd be all
right. But the mother may
have several young children
and no one to leave them
with. Perhaps one child has
asthma or some other trouble
which tends to keep her up
night after night.
Such a woman may be able
to help herself by-for a time

Two Oregon School
Districts Get Aid
Washington - (UN) - S e n.
Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) said
Friday that two Oregon school
districts have been certified
for payments under a law
providing financial aid for
schools in federally affected
areas.
Morse said the office of ed
ucation had informed him that
$50,010 had been certified for
Immediate payment to the
Klamath county school dis
trict and $7,020 to Neah-Kah-Nie
School District No. 56.
