5 Polaris Contracts

dent Kennedy's defense build
up. Connally said funds for the
five submarines are included
in the Navy's fiscal. 1962 bud

Three Polaris submarines,

Patrick Henry and the Robert
E. Lee, have already joined
the fleet. Eleven are now un
der construction, and plus the
five just assigned will bring
the total actual and potential
number of Polaris subs to 10.

recession drive to ease the
woes of the needy and re
vitalize the lagging emonomy.
The emergency program
was given new urgency by a
labor department report that
the number of workers draw
ing jobless benefits climbed
by 21,000 to a record high of
3,232,000 in the week ending
Jan. 21.
New claims for unemploy
ment benefits - an indicator
of recent layoffs - rose by
3,300 to a late-January record
of 491,600, the department
said Friday.

Accomplishments of Chamber
Reviewed; Future Plans Noted

Medford Chamber of Com
merce at the chamber's annual
dinner meeting Friday night
at the Rogue Valley Country
club.
About 190 chamber mem
bers and wives attended the
meeting.
Joining Taylor as chamber
officers are Frank Bash, first
vice president; Murray Gardi
ner, second vice president, and
Clarence Young, treasurer.
New board members to
serve three year terms are
Ken Baker, Robert Cunning
ham, Walter Garner, Manville
Heisel, Ray Johnson, S.V. Mc
Queen, John Moffatt and Joe
Moore. Latham becomes board
chairman.
In making his acceptance
speech, Taylor said Medford
is a growing community. "We
need to think positively and
develop an objective attitude,"
he said.
Taylor said the Medford
businesses are currently jock
eying for position. "They are
looking for more space and
more foot traffic," he com
mented. Two New Committees
Taylor then announced for

committees. "Because I know
both city and county heads
welcome chamber participa
tion in their management
problems and we likewise re
spect their opinions of our af
fairs, I am going to appoint
two committees to cover city
council and county govern
ment," he told the group.
They will study problems
on which the chamber should
express an opinion. This will
place the chamber board in a
more informed position,"
Taylor said. "Also they will
enable the chamber to add
constructive criticism and ad
vice." ,
"I hope formation of the
committees will broaden the
judgment required to make
decisions affecting our busi
nesses," Taylor continued.

in recognition of work La
tham did for the chamber.

tham's time. Location of the
building and financing ar
rangements were the most dif
ficult aspects of the project,
Latham explained. Construc
tion of the building is under
way and occupancy will oc
cur well ahead of the tourist
season, he added.

molds (fungi) have been found
in the stones that appear
sometimes in the ducts of the
glands which secrete saliva
into the mouth. The Actino
myces commonly causes a dis
ease called "lumpy jaw" in
farm animals.

days the ad appeared in Sun
set's February issue totaled
159, Latham said.
Latham said 35 progress
awards were presented to
Medford area business firms
during the year. The awards
testify to the vision and con
fidence represented by busi
ness firm investments in the
future growth of Jackson
county, he said. Receiving
awards at the meeting were
the Medford Manor, Pacific
Telephone Northwest and
Thunderbird Market.
Principal Speaker
Dr. Howard Runkel, chair
man of the speech department
at Willamette university, was
principal speaker. Runkel's
talk was titled "It's All in the
Way You Say It."
He discussed uses of the l'a
million words in the English
language. Interesting facts
Runkel disclosed included the
remark that Woodrow Wilson
used 56,000 different words in
his writings, while William
Shakespeare used only 48,000.
The average American uses
11 million words a year, Run
kel said.
Runkel explained various
ways words reveal the per
sonality of the speaker and
how they determine people's
reactions to us.
"Words have the power to
arouse the whole gamut of
human emotions," he said.
"They can amuse or perplex
us."
Runkel concluded by say
ing, "Mark your words be
cause your words mark you."

Clinic's Services To Be Explained
Services of the Family and
Child Guidance clinic will be
the topic of discussion on "Ad
ventures in Medicine" this af
ternoon at 4:30 o'clock over
Station KBES-TV, according
to the Jackson County Tuber
culosis and Health association.
The bi-weekly program is pre
sented in cooperation with the
Jackson County Medical So
ciety and the television sta
tion. Dr. Thomas Rutter, general
surgeon, the Rev. Robert F.
Dow rey, associate minister,
First Methodist church, and
Ben Day, lawyer - all mem
bers of the clinic's advisory
board - will explain the need
for the guidance clinic, and
point out ways in which the
newly expanded service, in
cluding family counselling,
will benefit the entire com
munity. Miss Ethel Shumway,
psychiatric social worker who
recently joined the staff of
the clinic will be introduced,
and will describe some of the
types of family problems
which are helped through tha
guidance clinic's services.
Although Family Service
Agencies have long been
established in larger cities the
Family and Child Guidance
clinic in Medford is compara
tively new, the Child Guid
ance clinic having been form
ed about seven years ago, with
the new service to families
being added in January of this
year. This service is under
the direction of Dr. A. Erin
Merkel, head of the Jackson
County Health department.

Basic Rule Violation
Jack Eric Rowbotham. 32.
of 1541 Jasper ave., Medford,
was fined $50 in Grants Pass
justice court Thursday for
violation of basic rule.
Rowbotham, represented by
another person in the justice
of the peace court, had enter
ed a plea of guilty to the
charge. This was one of the
heaviest fines ever levied in
the Grants Pass court for such
a violation.
Rowbotham was cited Jan.
27 by a state police officer
for travelling 100 miles an
hour in an 80-milc zone on
Highway 99, south of Sexton
mountain.
