skcl. 1 woe a Gutter? my
self, and no one thai wyAi;
about it until I was in hiftk
school. I remember the agony
I endured irom kids laughing
at me, imitating nie, and
grown-ups getting impatient
with me. Even though 1 was
helped, I still stutter some
times when I'm in a tight spot.
One of the things I learned
about this difficulty is that
parents can usually prevent it.
They must be patient, encour
age the child to speak slowly,
give him the feeling that he
can have all the time in the
world and nobody is rushing
him.
Instead of cooperating, my
husband gets Dickie more
wound up and nervous than
ever. He Interrupts him, hur
ries him, brings up new sub
jects while Dickie is strug
gling to say something. He
thinks the child's shining eyes
mean everything's swell. All
it means is Dickie's given up.
Mr. T. W. - My wife doesn't
realize how much she herself
stutters. Since she's with
Dickie much more than I, nat
urally most of his speech has
been picked up from her.
It isn't nervousness or ex
citement. It's just imitation.
Once Dickie gets to school,
he'll Imitate his teachers. An
other thing that holds him
back is his small vocabulary.
When I hear him floundering
to say "detective" or "astro
naut," I help him out. That
way he learns new words and,
at the same time, realizes I'm
speaking to him as though
he's a big fellow, not a baby
who's just learning to talk.
He s a smart boy and has
already started violin lessons
I'm sure the key to Improving
Dickie's speech lies with his
mother. She may need a new I
course in correction for her
self, so that she doesn't slip
back so often. Dickie adores
her and he copies her. It's
hero-worship. I adore her too
but I'm not as Impressionable.
The Council: Strangely,
stuttering Is a speech defect

trouble is emotional rather

The stutter-er k usually a
sensitive, keenly aJerl person.
When he's rstske!, Venscd up,
burdened, he is literally "be
yond word s." Sympathetic
parents, teachers, pals can re
verse this paralysis by rolling
out the figurative red carpet
which says, "Take your time.
I know what you'll say will
be interesting and worth-
while. Say it at your own
pace. We'll wait."
Mr. W. can help Dickie un
wind. Violin lessons at age 5
sound like pushing. So does
putting big words into the
child's mouth, when he's try
ing valiantly to get out a
plain Yes or No. Any lessen
ing of tension which Mr. W.
can achieve in the home will
have a salutary effect not only
upon Dickie's stuttering, but
upon Mrs. W.'s, too.

HOW'S THAT?
London -IUP1I- A London
art gallery today ran this nolo
on a forthcoming exhibition
by a painter named Turcato:
He protects himself from
identifying quality with in
dividuality. Individuality is
one, and one . , . is undoubt
edly the nearest point to quali
ty, but in fact it Is only the
beginning (as the Infinite is
the end) of the series of quali
