is no trick about netting

perhaps 10 days or two weeks
the man can be sober and cat

out of the hospital, he is like

who run the big hospital in
Lexington, Kentucky, where
they get thousands of people

of little use just to get a man
off the stuff." They felt that
the man should remain with
them for at least six months
until he Is rehabilitated, and
prepared to go out into the
world, where he must be able
to face the trials and tribula
tions of living and working
and occasionally losing a job
or a big sale. All men whom
I have met who had once be
come habituated to some drug
have admitted that they were
not well-adjusted; there was
some usually familial
weakness in their nervous
make-up that made it very
hard for them to work stead
ily as a stable mnn does.

or feelings of inferiority, or
hatred of working steadily at
the same job each day, or
working without an occasion
al spree. Some said that life
without drinking would be an
awful bore; others spoke of
terrible tensions that build up
and build up until they felt
compelled to take a drink to
get relief; others said that
they needed alcohol to help
them to forget what a mess
they had made out of much of
their lives; others said they
needed the alcohol to make
them sociable and merry; and
others that they just had to
have a drink when some mis
fortune came, and they could
not "take it."
No Such Cure
The point I must hammer
home to all the women who
want a quick cure for a hus
band or son or daughter is
that there is no such cure. If
one is to escape from a strong
tendency to take a drink when
it must not be taken, one must
engage in a life long fight, and
often a daily fight. As an able
man said in his fine book on
alcoholism; he sensed that his
father had to fight hard every
hour of every day in order not
to cave in and yield to his ter
rible temptation to go out and
get drunk. It was a life-long
struggle, and the son had to
suffer in the same way.
