Ashland Couple
Seeks Damages
' C. R. Shepard and Betty
Bell Shepard, Ashland,- have
filed a damage suit in Jack
son county circuit court
against Dee P. Hord, Robert
Van Vleet and the Universal
Develo pmenl Corporation.
Ashland, charging violation
of agreed upon building re
strictions. The Shcpards charge in
their complaint that they en
tered into a contract for pur
chase of some property from
the. development corporation
at 409 Liberty St., Ashland.
According to the complaint,
hc contract slated that only
dwelling houses and residence
houses would be constructed
on the block in which the
Shcpards' property is located
However, Hord and the de
velopment corporation o n
May 1, 1960, started construc
tion, of two four-unit apart
"ment houses on the block and
"later completed them in viola-
-tion of the agreement, the
Shepards charged in their
complaint.
- ' They further alleged that
they have been misled, in
jured and have sustained dam
ages. They seek to have the
contract cancelled, $16,822.50
returned to them as their pur
chase price and $2,000 to be
paid them for damages and
'$869.59 for the value oi im
provements made on the prop
erty.

greater ease and effectiveness

least, was the
initial impres
sion based
upon his first

encounter with reporters in
that national institution, the
presidential news conference.
Harry S. Truman broke
away from the tradition of
Franklin D. Roosevelt, who
let reporters come into the
president's oval office and
stand about his big desk. Be
cause of his polio affliction,
this was a ready way to ac
commodate both the president
and the reporters who wanted
frequent access to the chief
executive.
No Treaties
The news conferences in
Truman's era were moved to
the old state department build
ing and were conducted in a
room once used for signing
treaties. But Harry Truman
signed no treaties with the
press in his weekly meetings.
Instead, Truman seemed al
ways to be jousting with re
porters. To him the news con
ference was a contest of wits.
The reporters, he appeared to
believe, were always trying to
trap him with lough questions,
maybe even loaded questions.
His (jreal satisfaction showed
every lime he thought he had
eluded their wicked designs.
Sometimes he hud to snap out
a "no comment" to foreclose
discussion of a sensitive issue.
More often than not, his
answers were terse and often
conveyed little news and no
substance.
Dwight D. Eisenhower came
to the White House from a
career generally sheltered
from the demands of the press
for answers to touchy ques
tions. There was great appre
hension he might not be co
operative, Dirocl Quotes
Instead, Eisenhower allow
ed for the first time the direct
quotation of his answers.
Previously, reporters always
had to paraphrase presidential
answers and never use quota
lion marks. This old device
was supposed to protect the
president from making unfor
tunate statements. If he could
n't be quoled, no one could
ever prove he said what Ihe
newspapers paraphrased him
as saying.

cussed and plans made for
1961.
Also elected was Francis
Jacot, assistant chief ranger
for the park, to the board of
directors. Other board mem
bers include William Jonk'"S,
Klamath Falls, and Roby Ma-
bcry, Mrs. Nelson Smith, Mrs.
Ben Pool, Fred J. Novak, and
Bruce W. Black, all of Crater
Lake National park.

live television experience to
the evolution through which
the news conference has gone.
He also moved the conference
to a new, large auditorium
with modern broadcasting fa
cilities - and padded seats for
newsmen, in place of the hard
wooden chairs in that old
treaty room. Reporters won
dered whether they were to
be exceptions to the Spartan
tone of the New Frontier.
More important, Kennedy
meets the press with a certain
restrained eagerness. It does
n't show in his reserved and
quiet manner; it does show in
his desire to articulate the
position of the United States
government on a wide range
of issues.
