would never have the time or
the skill to write up the case
for the benefit of all doctors
who might be deeply inter
ested. Which reminds me that
I still have in my files rec
ords of patients with a dis
ease so rare that I saw only
three cases of it in 55 years.
I should long ago have writ
ten them up.
In order that enough exam
ples of certain very rare types
of cancer be made available
for study, in California all
records of such cases must be
filed with a central bureau.
Probably as a result, I recent
ly noted in this column that
a professor in the State Uni
versity Medical School in Los
Angeles has reported a re
markable study of two or
three hundred cases of acute
leukemia, with certain sur
prising discoveries about
them.
Pilot Study
Now the American Medical
Research Foundation has
granted $25,000 for a pilot
study of the births of 100,000
babies born in lOOcgood hospi
tals. The information obtained
will help doctors all over the
world to reduce the incidence
of illness and death in infants,
being born. It is planned in
the next five years to gather
information In regard to at
least 1,000,000 births. In
charge of the project will be
Drs. Sydney H. Kane and
Philip Barba, of Philadelphia.
The data will be sent to a
central bureau where they
will be processed by electronic
machines. Then, when some
disaster threatens, the doc
tor will know exactly what
the chances are of getting a
live and healthy baby by fol
lowing one or another technic.
Certainly your eyesight is
one of your valuable possess
ions. Don't ignore symptoms
which may need medical
treatment. Read Dr. Alvarez'
booklet, "How to Safeguard
Your Vision" to be on the
safe side. It may be obtained
by sending 25 cents and a
large, stamped, self-addresed
envelope with your request
to D r. Walter C. Alvarez,
Dept, MMT, The Register and
Tribune Syndicate, Box 957,
Des Moines 4, Iowa.

From Apartment
In New Orleans
New Orlcans-lUPll-The fam
ily ot a boy who broke the
white boycott at integrated
McDonogh 19 School today
faced eviction from its crowd
ed, four-room apartment.
John Thompson, 33, ex-GI
from Alabama, said because
his son, Gregory, 9, cracked
the white boycott Friday and
Monday, his landlady had or
dered them from their .apart
ment. He quoted the landlady as
saying:
" 'If you're going to send
your kids to school with nig
gers, you have got to move.
I can t stand the publicity and
the cops hanging around. It's
bad for the negihborhood."
To Fight for Righti
Thompson said he was going
to "keep on sending my kids
to that school. There ain t no
brown stain on my money."
"I'll fight for my rights as
long as I'm able," he vowed.
Gregory, in the care of two
U.S. marshals, braved jeers
of "traitor" and "niggcr-lover"
today to attend McDonogh.
About 35 bitter housewives
screamed the insults at Greg
ory as he was driven up to
the school. The women tried
to move in on the marshals'
car when it arrived, but six
uniformed policemen moved
them back across the street
from the school.
