something seriously wrong in
the abdomen. Then It may be
safer for the patient to have
his abdomen explored than to
wait until perhaps everyone
can see that he has a cancer.
By then, it very probably will
be inoperable, ari no one can
help him.
I agree with a number of
physicians who have written
me to say that they hate to
see a patient's abdomen ex
plored when, for a year or
more, it has been obvious that
he hns been dying of enncer.
For Instance; a man who had
had a cancer of his lower
colon removed, soon there
after became deeply jaundiced
and remained that way for the
next nine months. Obviously,
the cancer had spread into his
liver, but his kindly doctor
kept cheering him up, saying
it could still be due to a gall
stone. Finally, the patient
found a surgeon willing to ex
plore his abdomen, and a mass
of cancer was found In the
liver. Because the liver had
practically no function left,
the mun died that night. I
imagine that if he could have
come back for a moment and
spoken to his doctors he would
have said he was very glad to
have his discomforts over
with; but still, few physicians
like that kind of surgery, and
few will ever ask anyone to
perform it.

remedy for several diseases,
or perhaps some particular
disease such as arthritis. For
instance, every bp often, some-
one writes to say that she has
heard that sulphur is now
being used to cure arthritis,
and she wants to know how to
take it. I have to tell her that
sulfur was a popular treat
ment for arthritis some 50
years ago, and it has been
popular off and on ever since.
it is used with great enthusi
asm for a year or two and
then is given up as useless.
But always somebody "dis
covers" it again, and then it
goes through a new cycle of
popularity.
During the last month, I
have been receiving a lot of
letters from people who tell
me they have heard that if one
will take some sea water and
concentrate it by boiling, it
will become a wonderful
remedy for many diseases.
There is no sense to this, but
I have heard about it occa
sionally in the last 60 years.
Today apparently the ancient
idea is sweeping through the
country again. As a result,
thousands of people will try It,
and some will talk it up to
their neighbors. Later, it will
agnin be forgotten.
We human beings are fun
ny; we are so anxious to get
help that often, like the well-
known drowning man, we will
grasp at any straw we can
see. And if a drug does not
come from the medical pro
fession, It is believed in all the
more firmly. Which reminds
me of what happened in Paris
years ago when a supposed
quack who w.ts making a pile
of money by selling herbs
with a good line of patter, was
accidentally found by the po
lice to be a well-educated and
properly licensed physician.
The doctor then begged the
police not to give him away;
he said that if his thousands
of customers were ever to
learn that he was a qualified
physician, they'd all leave
him!

People write to ask what Is
chorioretinitis and all I can
say Is that usually it is a seri
ous disease of the inner linings
of the eyeball. It can greatly
injure the person's vision, and
so he should quickly see an
able ophthalmologist (medical
eye specialist) who will try
to determine, if possible, what
the cause it. Today, doctors
will think of disease due to
rare mold-like organisms, such
ii those of toxoplasmosis and
histoplasmosis; or they will
think of tuberculosis, or bru
cellosis (the abortion disease
of cuttle).
Allergy may be thought of.
Sometimes an antibiotic will
help, and sometimes also a
cortisone like drug will be
tried, also salicylates, iaiec
tions of foreign protein, and
desensitization by vaccines.
Naturally, a logical treatment
cannot be given unless a defi
nite cafise can be found. I am
sorry to say that commonly,
tne cause canot be found.
The point I want to hammer
home here is that I must not
try to give advice to the
hundreds of people who write
to me about a rare eye disease
that is likely soon to destroy
their vision. The thing they
must do quickly is to ga to the
best ophthalmologist (eye spe
cialist) their family doctor can
find for them. They must not
waste time trying to find
glasses that will help them.

even if you're a
'spring-time case' - you'll
want to read Dr. Alvarez' in
formative booklet, "Asthma,
Allergy and Hay Fever." It

Several Jackson county resi
dents are scheduled to partici
pate in the day-long District
Four meeting of the Ameri
can Cancer Society Feb. 1, the
Jackson county division of the
American Cancer Society an
nounced Saturday.
Registration and coffee hour
will be held at 9 a.m. in the
Episcopal Parish hall In Rid
dle, Ore. General chairman
for the event is Dr. Earl Law
son, Medford, District Four
medical director.
Mrs. John Day, director for
the southern Oregon district,
will open the official meeting.
Dr. Orval Eaton, president of
the 'Jackson County Cancer
Society, and Dr. L. Paul Walk
er, also of the Jackson county
crusade staff, will speak on,
"Why a Crusade."
The afternoon session will
feature a medical panel con
ducted by Dr. Robert Turner,
Jackson county, on recent ad
vances in cancer research by
Dr. John T. Brandenburg, also
of Jackson county.
Oregon division staff mem
bers Frank Mangelsdorf and
Bud Leonard will conduct the
Crusade worshop starting at
2:30 p.m. All Jackson County
Cancer Society crusade mem
bers are urged to attend the
meeting and no-host lunch.
