are five species of so-called
Oregon grape in the state, on
ly one of them Is the official
slate flower.
tf a person doesn't know
the difference, chances are he
hasn't the state flower in his
flower garden, according to
Dr. Helen M. Gilkcy, retired
curator of the Oregon State
college herbarium. Oregon
grape was selected as the state
flower in 189!), some 40 years
after Oregon became a state
Feb. 14, 1859.
All the Oregon grape spe
cies have compound leaves
made up of leaflets. These also
have yellow flowers and blue
grape-like berries.
But here's the difference:
The state flower grows as a
rather large shrub, up to 10
feel, compared to others In
the state which are only about
two feet high.
Besides being bushy, It has
glossy green leaves which are
divided Into 5 to 7 spiny leaf
lets. The flower cluster, which
Is branched and rebranched
on the stale flower, Is larger.
Oregon grape Is known either

The state flower grows in
the Douglas fir woods and
margins of it and in thickets
where, there is plenty of rain
fall in Western Oregon and
Northwestern Idaho and
points from Washington to
British Columbia,
Long-leaved Oregon grap
grows in higher altitudes. H
differs from the "slate" ono
in having a simple flower clus
ter with 9 to 15 leaflets. It
isn't as tall and the leaves
aren't as shiny.
In early history, Oregon
grape was made Into a popu
lar lea and was the chief in
gredient in a famous spring
tonic called "Pfunder's Ore
gon Blood Purifier."
In a more concentrated so
lution, the roots were used In
medicine as a cathartic, stimu
lant to the kidneys, In dyspep
sia, dysentery, typhoid fevef
and malaria.
The berries of Oregon grape
were used for both food and
drink. A yellow dye was made
by steeping the twigs and
bark in water.

In a scientific goldfish bowl
doesn't seem to bother Notty,
a frolicsome 3-year-old por
poise, In the least, but it's
proving frustrating to a group
of Navy scientists.
The scientists have been
studying Nolly to learn such
mammalian secrets as how a
porpoise can swim efficiently
at great speeds with so little
drag (friction) or disturbance,
how it transmits and receives
sounds over a distance of sev
eral miles and how It with
stands deep ocean pressures
beyond the known physiolog
ical capabilities of other mem
ma Is.
The answers, say the sci
entists at the U.S. Naval Ord
nance Test Station here, could
change the concept of under
water ordnance, sound detec
tion and antisubmarine war
fare. Notty, however, has been
doing a bit of good old Navy
goldhricklng loafing, the sci
cnlists think.
Observations of porpoises
at sea Indicate Notty's broth
ers and sisters can knife
through the water at 20-3IJ;
knots 24-35 miles an hour,
but clockings of Notty's speed
in the water have been slow
er. Another porpoise feat be
ing studied by scientists is its
ability to leap 15 feet out ol!
the water by using Its tail
vertically for power and it
fins as stabilizers.
The porpoise also is he
Ileved to be capable of de
livering 10 times as much
horsepower per pound of mus
cle than other mammals such
as humans and dogs, but the
Navy has yet to verify this.
Notty, named after the first
three Initials of the navy base,
was captured for the Navy
by Marine-land of the Pacific,
a commercial aquarium near
Los Angeles.
Notty Is six feet long,
weighs 1B01 pounds and has
been trained to wear plastia
rings and swim through
hoops and around obstacles--all
for the scientists' benefit.
