Jane Withers, Former Child Movie
Star, Plans To Build Poll Museum

is starting a family recreation
center near Hollywood where
Fhe will be able to how her
world famed doll collection in
a private museum.
"I started thinking about
the center six years ago when
I was hospitalized with arth
ritis," said the former child
star, now the mother of five
youngsters.
"My husband and I bought
40 acres out in a canyon near
Hollywood and we've been
working hard to get it. in
shape.
Miss Withers plans to have
a restaurant, fish ponds, rodeo
grounds and dance hall along
with her doll museum.
"The property is tired look
ing and depressing now," she
said. "It probably hasn't had
any paint for 15 years, but
with the help of our friends
we're getting it cleaned up."
Museum Has Priority
Although the whole project
ts close to Jane's heart, the
doll museum has top priority.
"It's been my life's ambition
to have a doll museum," she
revealed. "I have more than
3,800 dolls, no two alike, and
they've been in storage 14
years.
"People still send dolls to
me, and have been for years.
I have dolls made out of
match sticks, tooth picks,
olive pits, apple cores, every
thing. "I've gotten letters from
people in all parts of the
world who want to come and
see my dolls. With the family
recreation center, everybody
will have a chance to see
them."
Miss Withers hasn't made a
picture since she appeared in
"Giant" several years ago,
and her current role in "The
Right Approach" marks a sort
of comeback.
"It took me 20 years to save
enough money to buy that
land," she said. "So. Now I've
got to return to work for
more money to do what we
want."
Bearing on Project
R e m e m bering the days
when she came to Hollywood
as a five year old, fresh out
of Atlanta, Ga., Miss Withers
said her own break in show
business will have a bearing
on the project.
"I was 'Dixie's Dainty Dew
Drop' in Atlanta and had gone
as far as I could," she said.
"Everybody said I should go
to Hollywood, so Mom and I
came west."
Miss Withers got one movie
job after being smuggled into
a studio lot underneath a
blanket in the back seat of a
car. It was that experience
that Jane remembers today
when planning her park.
"I want to have talent
shows for kids so somebody
can see what they do," she
said. "The way the world
speeds up now, we don't have
time to notice new talent. If
you give these kids some ex
posure, somebody might no
tice them."
Jane plans to charge only
a $1 parking fee as admission
to the center. Later, when she
produces symphonies, jazz fes
tivals, rodeos and the like,
there will be an additional
charge,
Wants Old Wagons
"I'd love to get some old
wagons and things that are
stored on so many back lots,"
she said. "We want anything
that will be good for kids to
play with.
"A bunch of youngsters
would give their eye teeth to
be able to play on an authen
tic movie set."
The project isn't all fun,
and Jane plans to build a
country style church on the
property.
"We hope to Invite differ
ent ministers, priests and
rabbis to conduct services at
our recreation center on Sun
days," she said.

Arlene V. - How do I get
back a boy I threw over?
Wilbur M. - I like her, but
I m too hurt to go crawling
back.
Arlan V. - I am a girl 15
years old. I'm all mixed up.
Last June I met Frank of
whom I grew very fond. But
before I got to know him well,
he left for camp.
Then, in July, I met Wilbur.
He's the same age as Frank,
17. He was wonderful to me,
showed me a great, summer.
During that time I didn't
think of Frank even once.
But when Frank returned,
I realized I still liked him and
I found myself breaking dates
with Wilbur to be with him.
After a while, however, I
learned that Frank didn't real
ly reciprocate, my feeling and
worse, was spreading stories
about me which did nothing
to help my reputation.
Now 1 set? how well off I
was with Wilbur and would
like to go back with him. He
admits he still likes me, but
says his friends tell him not
to lower himself by taking
me back, I know I was wrong,
hut I have grown up since the
summer.
Wilbur M. - I am very fond
of Arlene and enjoy being
with her. But I agree with
my friends who say I'd be
lowering myself considerably
to go crawling back.
Before Frank came home,
at the end of the summer, I
was ready to ask Arlene to
go steady and 1 thought she'd
agree. But shortly after his re
turn, I called at her house,
That's when the trouble be
gan, She told me nobody was
home, so I couldn't come in.
1 stood outside, wailing for
her parents to come home.
Soon, though, I saw Frank
come out of Arlene's apart
ment. I decided to Ignore this In
cident and continued to make
dates with Arlene. But she
broke them, one after the oth
er. It was either she was sick,
or had to babysit, or some
thing. Then I heard some of
the rumors Frank was circu
lating about her. He's a Jerk
and I know the tales aren't
true.
But I don'l feel Arlene has
learned her lesson yet. Now
that she doesn't have Frank,
she wants me to hurry back.
She forgets I have some pride.

She lied to Wilbur. Instead
of telling him openly that she
would like to be friends with
two (or more) boys at the
same time, she tried to hold
on to Wilbur and "hide"
Frank from him by deception.
Surely she has learned two
things. First, that dishonesty
is fatal to a close friendchip.
The spectre' of suspicion hov
ers around the relationship
constantly. And second, there's
no reason why a 15-year-old
girl can't play the field light
heartedly among several
friends, both boys and girls.
She may like some more
than others, but she should be
able to let all of them know
about the .others, rather than
be limited to the exclusivity of
one, the so-called steady.
Even If Wilbur wanted her to
be his steady, he would prob
ably have consented to re
maining merely a "good
friend" if she explained thai
she'd like to "be free to date
others,
Should Wilbur forgive her?
Ills friends say no. But a boy
who thinks in terms of a
steady person-to-person rela
tionship,' can't listen to his
friends. He must find his own
answer. Arlene rebuffed him,
"used" him to till In a dull
summer and then banished
him when what she thought
was "something better" came
along. Playing one boy against
the other, she lost both.
Since he says he still likes
her, Wilbur might accept Ar
lene's apology and contrite
ness. She knows that her sin
cerity Is questioned, but not
completely discounted. Wilbur
can give her a chance to build
on what's left.

Bobbing Bobbins
The Bobbing Bobbins 4-H
sewing club held a meeting
recently at the home of Mrs.
Leonard Franek, 1676 Beall
lane, Medford. There were
four members present, and
Ann Bayne, a new member
from Phoenix.
The meeting was called to
order by Vice President Kris
ty Chamberlain in the ab
sence of President Shirley
Roach. The pledges were led
by Carol Roach and the min
utes of the last meeting were
read by Secretary Ann Bow
ling. .
The club received a thank
you note from the Dornbecker
Children's hospital in Port
land thanking the club for the
doll we made clothes for, and
gave to some child.
We discussed the possibility
of making 4-H dresses alike
during our meetings.
At the next meeting we
plan to visit the county farm
and take Valentines and heart
shaped cakes for the resi

Weapon Against Blood Clot May Have Been Found

nell university scientist thinks
he may have found a weapon
to subdue the greatest single
killer in the United States -the
blood clot, it has been
disclosed.
Dr. Eugene E. Cliffton, as
sociate professor of clinical
surgery at the Cornell Medical
college, has been searching for
seven years to find a way to
dissolve blood clots in the ar
teries of persons suffering
from heart and other ailments.
He said other scientists have
developed a drug which pre
vents blood clots from form
ing. This drug was adminis
tered to former President Ei
senhower in treatment of his
coronary ailment.
Enzyme Isolated
But Cliffton and associates
at other institutions have iso
lated an enzyme, fibrinolysin,
which has proven highly suc
cessful in dissolving already
formed blood clots in tests of
persons whose conditions
were critical.
The enzyme was adminis
tered to 45 persons suffering
from heart ailments. Six, who
were in a state of "cardiac
decompensation" at the time
of initial treatment, ditd.
Blood clots in the other 39
persons were dissolved and
pains they suffered prior to
treatment either disappeared
or were sharply reduced,
Cliffton said.
Fibrinolysin Injected
He said blood clots form
readily in the blood stream.
Generally the fibrinolynsln la
the blood gets rid of the clots.
But, he said, sometimes tha
fibrinolysin fails to dissolve
the clot. Then additional fi
brinolysin is injected in tha
same way insulin Is injected
into a diabetic to raise his
level of Insulin, Cliffton said.
