Mr. Q. Z. - I'm proud of my
name, but my son wants to
' change it.
Alexis Z. - It's a nice name,
but it trips people up.
.
Mr. Q, Z. - As you can see,
my name is a four-syllable
family name of Greek origin,
In this country of Smiths and
Jonses's, it's quite a mouthful,
1 admit,
But it's an honorable name.
My grandfather brought it to
these shores in 1003, and it's
listed on the service plaques
for two wars. That's why I'm
ashamed that my son wants
to change it. I told him a long
name never stood in the way
of an Kisenhower or a Rocke
feller or a Frelinghuysen.
I think our name is an asset,
not a- liability. It helps us
stand out in people's minds.
And I've come across even
longer names than ours, like
Kalzenellenbogen or Llewel
lynberry. I'll bet those fellows
wouldn't part with even one
of those double l's!
Alex is making a mistake.
By denying his name, he'll be
denying himself and turn Into
a zero. i "

Alexis Z. - Oh, I stand out
In people's minds, all right!
I'm "Hey, you-with-the-big-name!"
But they can't use that
on a check or an order.
' Dad doesn't understand that
my sales undertakings involve
. meeting dozens of people a
day over a wide territory, and
in the rush of my many con
tacts, I can'.t lake time out to
draw up an easy guide to
pronouncing, spelling, and
above all remembering my
name. It's a real jawbreaker.
Why make things so hard for
people? Life's too short to
spend half of it discussing,
explaining and apologizing for
your name. There are more
Important matters.
It's not as though I'm for
saking my family, my religion
or my ancestry. I'm certainly
not disgracing the name. All
I'm doing is taking off two
syllables. Everyone will still
recognize It.. It won't sound
Irish, or Hollywood.
.This way, my name won't
he a distraction, getting be

Jury Deliberates
L. A. Murder Charge
Los Angeles -IliPIl- A superi
or court jury starts its third
day of deliberations today on
first degree murder charge
against Henry Adolph Busch,
28, admitted, slayer of three
older women,
Jurors spent all day Tues
day reviewing the trial with
out being able to arrive at a
verdict before returning to
their hotel rooms for the
night.
Busch, a lens grinder, told
police at .his arrest last fall
that he strangled all three
women, one of them his aunt.
However, he maintained he
was helpless to have acted
otherwise because of an "un
controllable urge to kill."

The Council: Correction,
Mr, Z. This isn't the country
of just "Smiths and Jones's."
It's the country of the four
syllable Z.'s and all the divers
names that make our r811-call
a geographical miracle;
There are sound reasons for
changing a name, of course.
The courts recognize and ac
cept requests based upon busi
ness, professional, social, and
even psychological consider
ations. So long as the motive
is honest, people may shed or
alter names which present
problems. Discounting senti
ment, we must respect Alex's
decision here as to the poten
tial advantages for him of a
simplified name.
But lest too many of the
colorful, rhythmic, and mean
ingful surnames like Mr. Z.'s
vanish, a plea against the pale
conformity that would even
tually reduce us all to homog
eneous labels. A few days ago,
the newspapers carried word
of a valuable scientific contri
bution made by two professors
from the University of Chi
cago, Dr. William Offenkrantz
and Dr. Allen Rechtschaffer.
These are substantial, interest
ing mouthfuls indeed.
On the other hand, we see
Alex's point. The telephone
operator in a certain office
employing a man with a long
Teutonic name knows whom a
caller is asking for, no matter
what he says. For a fictitious
example, if she hears, "Is Mr.
S c h n ellenberger in?" she'll
say, "Sorry, Mr. Schneiden
bacher is out." Many people
don't even try to come near
getting it right.
So, Mr. Z., Alex by any
other name will still be Alfx.
And if he turns into the
world-beater he hopes to be,
the credit will still be entered
in the right column, that of
of the Z. family. Alex seems
devoted and proud enough to
see to that.
To check unwarranted
name-changing, however, and
to underline the importance
of a family name as a link:
between the past and the fu
ture, we like what Harrigan
sings: "It's a name that a
shame never has been con
nected with - Harrigan, that's
I!
