Residents Warned of
Improper Ventilation,
Combustion of Fuels
Portland-"Laek of ventila
tion and improper combustion
of fuels can team-up to create
serious illness and death to
unsuspecting individuals," Dr.
R. H. Wilcox, state health offi
cer, has warned residents.
"Carbon monoxide, the
product of improper combuS'
tion, is an odorless, invisible
. and poisonous gas," Dr. Wil
cox emphasized.
"Early symptoms of its pres-
ence are headache, dizziness
. and sleepiness, while later
symptoms include shortness of
breath, nausea and unconsci
ousness. Carbon monoxide
combines with the red blood
cells 200 times easier than
oxygen. When oxygen and an
unusually large amount of
carbon monoxide are inhaled
together, the carbon monoxide
displaces the oxygen, causing
illness. If oxygen is complete
ly cut off, death may result.
he said.
Any heating equipment
fired by solid, liquid or gas
fuel should be cheeked peri
odically. Chimneys and flues
should be kept in good repair
and free of obstructions. Lines
and connections for liquid and
gas fuels should be checked
for leaks.

shrubs; mushrooms; insects;

ges said, adding that those at

Likewise, gas-fired dryers,
water heaters and cooking
equipment should be checked.
Gas-fired oven should never
be used as space heaters, espe
cially at night when all mem
bers of the household are
asleep, he said.
The automobile, too, is a
prime producer of carbon
monoKide, the doctor pointed
out. The automobile should
never be left running in a
closed garage. Lethal concen
trations of carbon monoxide
can be built-up in a few mo
ments under such conditions.
It is equally dangerous to re
main in a tightly-closed auto
with motor running when it is
standing still, Dr. Wilcox said.
Carbon monoxide poisoning
can easily be prevented by
providing adequate ventila
tion and keeping heating
equipment and gas-fired appli
ances properly vented and in
good repair, Dr. Wilcox noted.
