The death by strangulation
oC a tree is a slow, deliberate
operation, the outcome of
which is inevitable.
There is no cry of pain or
fright from the victim; no
sense of elation or triumph
from the victor. The suffoca
tion is a force, applied with al
most a delicate squeeze that
may last for several years,
during which time both the
victim and the one applying
the force attempt to carry out
their destined purpose.
A bird is the real cause of
the struggle. It alights in the
top of a palm tree with the
fruit of a wild fig in its beak.
The bird eats the fruit, wipes
its bill on a palm frond and
leaves a tiny seed.
The warm sun, the rain, and
tile chemistry of growth alerts
the tiny seed. It sends out a
tiny root-hair. Gravity acts,
pointing it downward. Day by
day it extoqds itself, following
the trunk of the palm tree.
No notice is taken of the ac
tion. The palm tree, host to
the tiny seed and extending
root, continues to grow, un
mindful that this small root
some day will strangle it to
death.

Small Worlds
Around Us
By Lynn M. Watkins
(Register and Tribune Syndicate,
1961)
Rains come, dew forms, the
sun shines, warm and bright
accelerating the growth of the
fig-root. It puts forth a small
cluster of green leaves and
the root continues to grow to
ward the waiting earth.
At this time the fig is a
weak, spineless little vine
with little strength but with
great determination. Eventu
ally the root-tip touches the
earth. It penetrates the soil.
Moisture and soil nutri
ments rush up the root, feed
ing the leaves high above
Food is manufactured now in
great amounts by the sun ac
tion on the green leaves. The
roots grow in girth and num
ber; the strangler fig is begin
ning to live up to its name.
What was a tiny root-hair
extending from the baby fig
plant atop the palm tree down
into the ground now becomes
swollen and strong. More
roots form; they, too, seek the
earth. They clamber on top
of one another, they encircle
the palm trunk. They begin
the big squeeze. The victim
struggles.
Month by month the con
striction grows in intensity.
The strangler fig, now a giant

tree in its own right, towers
above the. slower growing
palm, robbing the palm of
sunlight, stealing from its sou
nutriments. The pressure on
tile palm trunk has now be
come terrific.
The strangulation Is com
plete. It Is murder, slow, silent
and deliberate. There is no I
cry from the victim; no ela
tion on the part of the victor.
By now the body of the palm
tree is hidden by the entwin
ing trunks of the strangler.
The palm tree, the innocent
host that offered a perch for
the bird that carried the tiny
seed and later supported the
weak vine, and still later the
serpentine roots of the stran
gles eventually gives up the
unequal battle the survival
of the stronger murder by
strangulation.
Long ago, the bird that cur
ried the seed passed from the
earthly scene, but its UesLX...
ants still seek the fruit of the
wild fig. The strangler itself,
now an adult, produces its
own fruit. Other birds will
come, carry seeds to otner
trees, and bring about the
strangulation of future trees.
Such is the strange chain of
events in the life of Fiscus
aurea, the wild golden fig that
embraces its victim in a clasp
of death.
