Shooting Story
Changed by Youth
A 16-year-old Medford boy
who first told police he had
been shot in the arm while
walking through a field
changed his story last night
and admitted that he accident
ally shot himself while play
ing with a .22 caliber rifle.
Richard James Morden, 172
Greenway Circle, was treated
at Rogue Valley hospital for a
flesh wound in his upper arm,
and then released to go home
with a neighbor.
Morden called police about
6 p.m. yesterday and said he
had been walking through a
field in back of his residence
when he heard some shooting
and then felt a "tug" at his
arm. He looked down, he said,
and saw that lie had been
shot.
Medford police, however,
noticed powder burns on the
boy's shirt near the bullet
hole, which would indicate
that the gun was fired from
close range. On further ques
tioning, the boy admitted that
he had been working on the
rifle when it went off and shot
him.
Police said the boy appar
ently told his original story
because his father, who was
out of town at the time of the
accident, had given him strict
instructions not to touch the
gun.

of the United States. But he is
only the 34th man to hold the
job. The confusion stems from
Grover Cleveland, who served
two non - consecutive terms,
and who is counted twice by
official historians.

W. H. (Hank) Fisher, who
died Jan. 18, was appointed
chief electrical engineer for
the California Oregon (Power
company in 1954.
A graduate of Oregon State
college with an electrical en
gineering degree, Mr. Fisher
was first employed by Copco
as a chainmnn and draftsman.
He became a registered pro
fessional engineer in 1952 and
in 1956 presented a paper at
the Northwest Electric Light
and Power association conven
tion.
He was past president of the
Rogue Valley section of the
Professional Engineers of Ore
gon and served as chairman
of the engineering and oper
ating section of the Northwest
Electric Light and Power as
sociation, and was a member
of the guidance committee.
Mr. Fisher was a member
of the Copco budget commit
tee and did much of the plan-
House Trailer
Law Is Favored
The Medford city council
last night approved a plan
ning commission recommenda
tion that house trailers be pro
hibited as residences in the
city unless they are in speci
fied trailer courts.
The planning commission's
recommendations will be em
bodied in an ordinance and
presented to the council for
final approval at its next
meeting. The ordinance would
not apply to those house
trailers already being used as
residences and which have
met city regulations to date.
It was pointed out in a re
port to the council that there
arc now 75 house trailers be
ing used as residences outside
of trailer parks In the city. An
estimated 30 of these have
never obtained a city permit
and are considered illegal.
Councilman Donald Hanson
questioned the need for the
new trailer ordinance noting
that a new zoning ordinance
was being prepared by the
city which should effectively
control trailers.
Councilman Robert Baccus,
however, pointed to the recent
influx of trailers as residences
In the city, and said there Is a
need for an interim ordi
nance." Councilmen Hanson
and Al Bradford voted against
acceptance of the commis
sion's recommendation.
The council also called for
a special meeting with the
commission to discuss several
things which the council feels
need discussing.

Complaint Seeks
Damages for Well
A complaint has been filed
in circuit court by a valley
couple against the Talent Irri
gation district for damages
done to a spring on their
farm on Coal Mine rd.
The complaint, filed by Os
car and Evelyn S. Gysin,
seeks $40,000 special damages
and $6,000 general damages.
According to the complaint
the Gysin farm Included a
spring which was near an ir
rigation canal. About Feb. 1,
1059, the irrigation district
widened the canal near the
spring and, according to the
complaint, shock waves from
the explosives used in the
project caused a shift in the
underground strata so the
spring ceased to flow except
when there is water in the
canal.
It is stated that the Gysins
had used the spring water for
Irrigation, cattle and to serve
their house and lt is now nec
essary for them to drill a
well.
