Remote Parish
Corpus Christi, Tex. IUPD -Lt.
Cmdr. E. IV Weidler, a
navy chaplain, believes he
has had the most remote con
gregation in the world.
Weidler, a minister of lh
Church of Christ, just spent a
year in the Antarctic and
preached once at the South
Pole.
He said he was the first
Protestant clergyman to con
duct services at the Pole, al
though a Jesuit priest said
Mass there in 1957. The criti- .
cal weight factor of polar fly
ing limited transportation of
chaplains, he said.
Woidler explained that
about 20 persons, most of
them scientists, stay the year
around at the Pole, where the
temperature set a new record
last year of 127 '4 degrees
below zero.

The chaplain spent only
three days at the Pole, and
was stationed most of the
year at McMurdo Sound in
the Antarctic. There the
temperature rises as high as
38 degrees during the sum
mer. 50 Below Zero
Winter readings at McMur
do get as low as 59 below
zero, Weidler said, and tha
weather is very changeable,
"In a few hours it can go
from normal to condition zero
-which means you stay put,"
he said. "No one can go out
side, and the winds rise to 70
to 80 knots."
Weidler was one of 138 per
sons who "wintered over" at
McMurdo. During the sum
mer the population rises to
around 500.
"Morale here is excellent,"
the chaplain said. "Most of
the men are typical sailors
who manage their own prob
lems and get along well with
others."
He conducted religious serv
ices every Sunday at tha
chapel. The church also
housed a lounge and library
and Weidler kept it open
daily.
Weidler talked with his
wife and five children In
Texas almost weekly by short
wave radio while serving with
Operation Deep Freeze 1960.
He nud been chaplain at the
U. S. Naval Hospital at Cor
pus Christ! for two years be
fore the Antarctic assignment.
I Frozen Salt Wafer
Makes Fresh Wafer
Washington (Science Serv
ice) - Fresh water for the ex
ploding population of the
earth can be produced from
salt water by freezing with
ordinary "cooking" gas at a
cost of only 10 cents per 1,000
gallons for the power and
chemicals.
George Karnofsky of tht
Blaw-Knox Company, Pitts
burgh, Pa., reported these fig
ures at a symposium on salina
water conversion at the
American Institute of Chemi
cal Engineers meeting here.
Butane is used as a refrig
erant and as a melting agent
in the process. A pilot plant
for further studies is now
being built. Preliminary stud
ies indicate that a plant with
a ten-million-gallon per day
capacity can be built for $20,
000,000. The salt water is frozen and
melted with normal butana
or isobutane in a closed cycle,
providing direct contact be
tween the butane and tha
water in both freezing and
melting steps.
First Astronaut to
See Earth 3 Ways
Washington (Science Serv
ice) - The first astronaut will
have three ways of "looking"
at the earth as he orbits
around it one hundred miles,
up. Besides direct vision, ha
will have a periscope and In
struments. The astronaut will be able
to see only an edge of the
earth and black space beyond
it when he looks through the
window in front of his head.
He will not be able to see
the whole earth at any time,
but will have a periscope be
tween his knees that shows
him a view of the earth be-'
ncath him as a circle the size
of a grapefruit. This will rep
resent an area 1,800 miles In
diameter from horizon to hor
izon at this altitude, Dr. Rob
ert Voas of the Space Task
Group, National Aeronautics
and Space administration,
Langley Field, Va., told Set
encc Service here.
