Many people ask me to
write them about their "poor
circulation," and what to do
for It and I
have to say

They are us
ing a vague
layman's term,
rather than a
definite medt-

this leaves me puzzled. If a
physician were to tell me of a
person who had an "impaired
circulation," I could imagine
a poorly acting heart with
shortness of breath, blue lips
and swollen ankles; but I sus
pect that the person who
writes me about poor circula
tion just feels below par, per
haps with cold hands and feet.
Without knowing much more
about him, I cannot guess how
he can be helped.
Which reminds me how
often I am distressed because
I cannot answer the nice per
son who wrote me, asking
how to treat his neuralgia, his
eczema, his asthma, his cough,
his itchiness, or his swollen
ankles. It distresses me not to
answer him (or her) but I just
cannot guess what his (often)
layman's term means - in his
particular case.
For instance; the woman
with a neuralgia may have a

little tumor on a nerve, or tic
douloureux, or a Horton's
headache, or a severe mi
graine, or a sinus full of pus,
or a tooth dead under a filling,
or a mental upset due to her
husbands chasing after
blonde , or a dozen other
troubles. The treatment for
one condition is no good for
another, so why should I start
guessing. If I could see the pa
tient, I might have to study
her for several days, perhaps
with the help of other special
ists before I could make a
diagnosis.
Hence, good people, if you
write me and do not get an
answer, one reason may be
that, on that day, 100 letters
came in, or I was away for a
week lecturing, or without
studying you, I Just cannot
guess what is wrong.
Every week I got letters
from good people who tried to
write out for me the diagnoses
their doctors gave. I do my
best to read them, but often I
cannot guess what the doctors
said, To illustrate: A woman
just wrote that the doctor
said her son has "inflectus
momanuklcfloatus." Fort u n-
ately, that one is so easy I can
guess what it is - "infectious
mononucleosusl" But many
others I just cannot guess.
Often I know that when I
do answer a letter, but can
write only one or two sen
tences, the person must be
terribly disappointed or even
angry. To those people
would like to say, imagine
yourself on an extremely busy
day - and I am a very busy
man - imagine yourself, In
what little spare time you
have, trying to answer per
haps 50 letters, many of them
several pages long. You just
could not do It.
If 1 were writing an "ad
vice to the lovelorn" column,
I could hire six women to
answer my mall, but with a
doctor's column, I cannot do
this. Most of the questions arc
such technical ones that only
doctor with many years o
experience could ever hope
to write an intelligent answer.
Many of the questions are of
a type which couw be an
swered only with guesses,
which I do not care to make.
Here, for instance, is a letter
from a man who asks, "If I get
my rupture operated on, will
I get a good result, and will it
be permanent?" No one can
answer such a question. That
reminds me of that old ques
tion, "How long is a piece of
string?"
