FLOREANA-
A Modern Swiss
Family Robinson
She and her husband had come to this remote island
to build a new life; now, alone
and terrified, she faced childbirth and death
By MARGRET WITTMER
Heinz and Margret Wittmer left Ger
many in 1932 for a remote island 600 miles
off the coast oj Ecuador. With them was the
author's sickly 12-year-old stepson Harry,
who they hoped would regain his health in
the tropical climate. With only basic proui-
sions, they began building a new lie on an
island occupied by one other woman and an
aloof vegetarian dentist, Dr. Karl ijitter. At
the end of the year, Mrs. Wittmer prepared
for the birth of her first baby despite Dr.
Hitter's refusal to attend her. This is Part II
of the Wittmers' true adventure, condensed
from the book, "Floreana," by Margret
Wittmer, to be published by E. P. Dutton
in April, 3961.
WE had been on Floreana three months.
We lived simply, worked hard, and
were content. We were making good prog
ress with our new home our log cabin,
22 feet by 12, built with our own hands.
All three of us were in good health.
Harry had grown a lot and was much stur
dier. If only his eyesight would improve, as
we hoped it would in this green solitude.
Solitude? We did not feel lonely. The
short tropical day was so full we had no
time for brooding. Theaters, films, enter
tainment? we did not miss them. From
our cave we had a wonderful view of the
sea. In the evening we could watch glorious
sunsets. We saw bright birds wheeling
around, and the flowers shining in their
brilliant colors. All this more than made
up for the life we had left behind.
Our house was ready at last, the essen
tials at least: the kitchen and my bedroom.
And the rooms were under a roof thatched
with sugar cane to protect us from the in
cessant rain. This was a palace, in compari
son with the cave where we had first settled.
We built low foundations from lava stones
and the walls from logs.
My first labor pains began the day after
we finished the house, Dec. 30. Everything
was ready: linen, bandages, cotton wool,
scissors, and a tin of talcum powder. Would
it be enough talcum, I wondered feverishly.
I only had this one tin!
Familv Weekly, January 15. J961
The pains became violent, but the day
passed, and so did the night, though I
scarcely slept. Heinz made a support for
my back so I could sit up a little; the pains
weren't quite so bad then. I felt alternately
burning hot and freezing cold. Dawn crept
on into morning; still nothing happened.
Heinz and Harry worked hard that day,
and when night came they dropped off
to sleep at once, leaving me alone with my
pains. I had to bite hard into the pillows so
as not to scream. I didn't, either.
Now it was New Year's Day, and surely it
couldn't go on much longer. I was desper
ate and couldn't eat any of the food Heinz
lovingly prepared for me. I could only
drink and drink. I was feverishly thirsty
and felt as if my throat was burning.
The third night went by like an age. It
was 72 hours since the pains had started;
they were more than flesh and blood could
stand. That night Heinz and Harry hardly
slept either. They got up while it was still
dark. I heard them going out. I was so weak
I couldn't even say anything anyway they
would be back soon. They had gone out;
I didn't know why. Perhaps they had heard
a wild bull breaking into the garden.
It was still dark. I felt as if all the air had
left my lungs. Air! Air! I must have air!
I couldn't stay in bed any longer. I got up,
dizzy with fear and pain. "Heinz!" I tried
to call, but could hardly hear my own voice.
I went out of the house. Heinz and Harry
might have gone to the caves. I staggered
over toward the caves, half fainting. There
was no one in the main cave.
"Heinz!" It was more of a whimper than
a scream; it wouldn't have reached outside
the cave. There were a few things still left
in the cave. I saw a crate, two crates. They
were open, and there were books in them.
A book yes, this was the time to find a
book and read. It might calm me down a
bit. A rickety table was still there, but
there wasn't a spark of fire in the fireplace.
Had they let the fire go out? I couldn't
remember where I was; I didn't realize the
house was 20 or 30 yards away from here.
