Treated it Mayo
For Hypertension
Rochester, Minn. -IUPD- The
Mayo Clinic announced today
that novelist Ernest Heming
way, 61, who entered the
famed diagnostic institution
Nov. 30 under an assumed
O

u
name, is being treated for hy
pertension. A brief clinic announce
ment said Hemingway's condi
tion "is regarded as satisfac
tory."
"He has received no surgi
cal treatment and none is con
templated," the clinic said. "It
is necessary, however, that his
right to privacy be respected
and that he have the benefits
of rest and quiet."
Hypertension is an abnor
mally high blood pressure. It
is at times accompanied by or
ganic changes such as nephrit
is and diabetes, and by ner
vousness, headaches and dizzi
ness. But the announcement
did not elaborate beyond nam
ing the ailment.
Today's announcement gave
no indication when Heming
way would be released. Earli
er, a Mayo spokesman said the
Nobel Prize-winning author
should be discharged within
10 days from St. Mary's Hos
pital, where he is staying
while undergoing treatment.
Hemingway entered the
clinic after a hunting trip in
Idaho.
The Mayo spokesman said
Mrs. Hemingway and the
writer's physician had refused
permission for any interviews
with the famed patient.
Hemingway, who won the
Pulitzer Prize for fiction in
1953 and the Nobel Literature
Prize in 1954, first achieved
world fame with publication
in 1926 of "The Sun Also
Rises."
The burly novelist is prob
ably the most famed Ameri
can writer of his generation.
His permanent home in re
cent years has been just out
side Havana, Cuba. But Hem
ingway has not been there
during recent months when
diplomatic relations between
Cuba and the United States
reached the breaking point.
Polaris Missile
Fired Successfully
Cape Canaveral, Fla. - OIPD -America's
most versatile bal
listic missile, the Navy's Po
laris, thundered over the At
lantic Ocean 1,600 miles
Wednesday in its first firing
of the new year.
The Polaris, a highly mobile
weapon capable of delivering
in one blow a warhead with
40 times the destruction of a
Hiroshima-type atomic bomb,
will be launched from land
based launching pads, ships
and submarines during 1961.
Scientists early today were
busy outfitting one nuclear
submarine, the Robert E. Lee,
for a submerged launching of
the Polaris 30 miles off the
coast.
The launching, expected
soon, may be the final tryout
for the Robert E. Lee, Ameri
ca's third ballistic missile-firing
sub. The nation has two
other atomic submarines, the
George Washington and Pat
rick Henry, on duty in the At
lantic with 16 nuclear-tipped
Polarises each.
The shot Wednesday mark
ed the third success in as
many tries for the advanced
model Polaris, which packs a
new solid-propellant and a
glass-encased second stage to
push its range to 1,725 miles.
Earlier models being fired by
the submarines have a 1,300
mile ability.
