patrol came upon Lawrence
Wayne Frady, 54, and Grace
Pearl Goodman, both of
Shedd, sitting In the car a
short distance away from
where it had struck the park
ed trucks.
Frady told police he had
been driving the car and
pulled to the side of the road
to park'and felt a slight bump,
but he thought 'it to be
minor thing. Police were not
sure of the lime of the acci
dent, but said It was about-
4:45 a.m.

The firing on the merchant
ship took place Jan. 9, 1861.
Monday cadets at The Cita
del again lined the shore and
cut loose a barrage of rounds
at a ship moving up the har
bor. The action is part of a
centennial pageant, which
will rc-creale the events with
near-authenticity. .
Commanding the cadets 100
years ago was Maj. P. F. Ste
vens, head of the military
institution. History credits
Cadet G. E. Haynsworth with
the dubious honor of pulling
the lanyard on the first shot.
Military Hero
A famous military hero
headed the cadets. Gen. Mark
W. Clark; of World War II
and Korean War fame, por
trayed Maj. Stevens, and Ca
det Richard Law was to fire
the first round Monday. Clark
is the president of The Cita
del. The salvo fired Monday
was in the direction of the

Orleans Parish, rigged out in
the disguise of sails, rigging

tect and now he has at last
attained all the required cre
dentials. After applying for
a position with a small but
solid concern, he was inter
viewed and accepted. He liked
the work and his associates
and we thought he'd dig in
and build a career for himself
there.
All of a sudden, Vinnie
found out that his father had
put in a call to the president
of this firm on the morning
he was interviewed. My hus
band happens to be one of
the leading architects in the
nation. But he requested that
Vinnie be judged on his own
merits, and that no mention
of his father or the call be
made.
I Now Vinnie wants to quit.
I He says the only way he can
prove his ability is to change
his name and work in another
slate. We can't convince him
' that employers will hire him
j for his own ability, not bin

thing that dogged me all
through college and graduate
school. Now it's knocking the
pinnings from under me when
I try to make my way Inde
pendently as an architect. I'm
always in the shadow of my

No mutter how I try, I can

they shake their head and
sigh, "It's O.K. But only half
the Job his father could do!"
Can you imagine how it
feels never to be able to be
just you, always to be viewed
as a pale facsimile of your
i father? I love him, I admire
him, but I don t wat te toe
him. 1 want to be me.

The entire corps of cadels
numbering more than 2,000
marched the two miles from
the campus to the battery,
and an elite group of 100 ca
dets manned the Confederate
artillery pieces.
The centennial week end
at Charleston began Saturday
with a full dress parade by
the cadels, a speech by Civil
War historian Bruce Catton
and a military ball complete
with hoop skirls for the ladies,

Sunday, Virginia began ils
observance of the centennial
with a quiet ceremony at the
tomb of the greatest Southern
general - Robert E. Lee. The
ceremony coincided with one
at the tomb of the Northern
general-Ulysses S. Grant-in
New York. Dr. Francis P.
Gaines, chancellor of Wash
ington and Lee University,
praised Lee's work during
reconstruction days after the
war.

Washington and Lee, which

nearby Virginia Military In
stitute attended the affair,

sheer chance. What does mat
ter is making good. No
healthy business will keep a
man unless he delivers, re
gardless of who suggested
they hire him.
Evidently Vincent is filling
the bill for his employer.
Eventually his own individual
touch, his special "signature,"
will emerge fully. His preoc
cupation with measuring up
to, competing with, being
over-shadowed by his eminent
father, is a neurotic waste of
emotional energy. It's delay
ing the Job at hand, namely
for Vincent to establish him
self as a proficient architect.
We hope he doesn't fall into
the what's-the-use lassitude of
many sons and daughters of
the famous, rich, outstanding
ly successful figures of time
and history. At the same time,
his plaint points up the
thoughtlessness of some of us
in criticizing these scions (or
not doing the impossible, for
not topping the untoppable.
All credit to anyone who
can, regardless of family help
or hindrance, carve his own
personal niche of service and
experience in a business, an
art, a profession, a philan
thropy, a craft or a public
office. Vincent Jr., is on his
way to doing just that as an
architect. Right now, the (act
that his father is in the same
line should mean no more
than a chance for some lively
shop talk when they meet.
