lino, Calif., had attempted to
commit suicide by firing one
shot into her abdomen, Satur
day afternoon. She was rushed
to an Etna physician's office
by her husband, Floyd, fol
lowing the shooting, and then
was taken by ambulance to
the hospital where she under
went emergency surgery,
Death came at 5 o'clock today
Cottar said her husband in
dicated she had been despon
dent prior to the shooting. She
was reported to have been in
failing health.

world's largest blimp, the
Navy's 342-foot ZPG2, was be
ing reoulfittcd today for
oceanographic research.
The craft arrived at this
southern California coastal
city Saturday to become the
first lightcr-than-air trans
continental craft to visit the
West Coast in five years.
The Navy said the purpose
of its six or eight-week so
journ here was for ocean re
search - but some unconfirm
ed reports said the blimp
would be used lo help de
velop future antisubmarine
warfare tactics along the Pa
cific Coast.
Equipment on Board
The sources indicate that
intricate new electronics
equipment was being placed
aboard the craft for use in
such a mapping project.
The Navy announced only
that oceanagraphic research
will be conducted in conjunc
tion with the Scripps Insti
tute of Oceanography at La
Jolla, Calif.
The ship with its 15-man
crew took five days to travel
from Lakehurst, N.J., to the
old Sanla Ana Air Base here.
It is the first blimp since 1956
to use the base, which ac
ommodated airships for Pa
cific Coast submarine patrol
during World War II.

Mining Experts Say 'Miracle'
Saved Reno Youth From Death

was dark and cold and ter
rifying at the bottom of the
50-foot air shaft . . . and 15-year-old
Larry Dacek thought
he was going to die.
Mining experts agreed to
day that a "miracle" saved
him.
Larry, a Reno High school
student, was trapped for 11
hours Saturday in the air
shaft of a silver mine in Ne
vada's Comstock Lode. He had
gone with two classmates in
search of relics for a history
class.
They found the mouth of
the Sutro Tunnel in rugged
hills not far from here, but
the mouth of the tunnel was
flooded.
I remember from school
the tunnel was ventilated with
shafts from the top every two
thousand feet, Larry said
"so we decided to climb the
mountain above the tunnel
and see if we could get in
this way."

lowered by the other two
youths. Fred lost, and was
about 10 feet down when he
changed his mind.

tatively on Friday before the
trial was recessed for the

Observers fell it would lake
at least another week to com
plete jury selection because
of challenges remaining for
the prosecution and defense
attorneys.
Finch, who turned 44 Sat
urday, and his mistress are
accused of fatally shooting his
wife, Barbara Jean, 34, July

miracle" kept the timbers in-
