Washington -ItTII-Sen. Paul
H. Douglas (D-Ill.), today re
quested Senate committee
hearings next week to speed
action on a S392 million loau-and-grant
program designed
to revitalize economically de
pressed areas.
Douglas told United Press
International he made the re
quest in a letter to Sen. A.
Willis Robertson (D-Va.), who
is expected to be re-named
chairman of the Senate Bank
ing Committee, which handles
area redevelopment legisla
tion.
The Douglas bill which has
the support of President
elect John F. Kennedy was
the first Senate bill intro
duced in the 87th Congress.
Make Pledge Good
It would make good on a
campaign pledge by Kennedy
who vigorously criticized the
administration for not provid
ing more assistance to areas
hard hit by chronic un
employment. Aid to distressed
areas is one of Kennedy's five
priority legislative requests.
Robertson , promised
"prompt consideration" of the I
Douglas measure, even though :
he conceded he was opposed
to it. A similar bill was ap
proved by the committee and
passed by the Senate two
vears ago. The House cut it
and President Eisenhower ve
toed it.
Robertson would not specu
late on- whether committee
hearings could depend on
when the Senate got around
to appointing Its standing
committees.
Would Remove Hurdle
Robertson said the hearings
would be held before the full
banking committee rather
than before a subcommittee.
