Council of Churches
Preparatory Study
Booklet Published
Geneva - An intensive ef
fort to bring the quest for
Christian unity home to local
congregations around the
world will get underway soon.
The occasion is the publi
cation of the World Council
of Churche s' preparatory
study booklet for the Third
Assembly to be held in New
Delhi, India, Nov. 18 to Dec.
6, this year.
During the year the 76-page
booklet will be studied around
the world by tens of thous
ands of Christians belonging
to the Council's 178 member
churches.
In small village churches in
Asia and Africa, in big city
congregations in Berlin and
Chicago, men and women will
come together to study and
discuss the Assembly theme,
"Jesus Christ, the Light of
the World."
The booklet is designed to
enlist the participation of the
local church in the Assembly.
An initial printing of nearly
half a million copies in
French, English and German
will be followed by other lan
guage editions for Spanish
speaking, Scandinavian, Asian
and African countries. In all
the booklet will be published
in more than 20 languages.
The total run may reach one
million copies.
Spiritual Presence
In the preface, Dr. W. A.
Visser 't Hooft, general secre
tary of the World Council of
Churches, explains that the
Vigyan Bhaven hall in New
Delhi where the Assembly
will be held, cannot possibly
accommodate the hundreds of
thousands of members of
churches to whom the bro
chure will go "in all parts of
the world, and in very many
languages. But we need your
spiritual presence, your per
sonal participation in this
event."
The churches meeting in
Now Delhi, through their
chosen delegates, Dr. Visser 't
Hooft says, have their "rele
vance in the local congrega
tion, in the common worship,
and the working and living
together of individual Chris
tian men and women." Chris
tians often ask "how they
can play their part in this
new ecumenical movement of
our time. Here is one oppor
tunity." "As your congregation takes
up the study and discussion
of themes of this booklet, you
will implement your member
ship in a ' world-embracing I
community of the people to
God," Dr. Visser 't Hooft says. I
