People keep asking me to
say again why I fear trans
fusions. I greatly fear them
because so
many donors
in spite of
every precau
tion that can

rus of serum
hepatitis. If
should have a
trans fusion
and the donor should have
the virus In him, I probably
would be down on my back
in two or three months, suffer
ing from an inflammation of
my liver that could make me
very ill. It could leave me
handicapped for life with a
cirrhosis of the liver, and it
could even kill me.
Is it any wonder, then, that
every so often I read in some
medical journal an editorial
by some great expert on
blood-begging us doctors to
quit ordering transfusions for
people who almost certainly
would recover from their ill
ness or operation without the
help of blood? Is it any won
der that recently the chief
legal counsel for the Amen
can Medical Association
begged us doctors not to give
transfusions of doubtful neces
sity? As he said, what with
serum hepatitis, transfusion
reactions (sometimes alarm
ing) and mix-ups in blood
grouping, or in giving the
right blood to the wrong per
son with the same family
name, "Blood for transfusion
is dynamite."

rhage from a stomach ulcer
or an accident.
I can imagine many people
asking, "But if blood can so
wreck a person's health or
kill him, why do doctors give
it when they don't have to?"
And I think the answer is
that some of us, in our great
desire to do everything to get
a sick person well, go to ex
tremes. Our zeal carries us
away. Also there are hundreds
of thousands of men and wom
en who love the doctor who
over-treats them. They think
he is wonderful. Other people
don't want to be over-treated.
I am reminded of an eve
ning long ago when one of my
children aged 6 was down
with a very mild case of
chickenpox-usually a disease
which needs no treatment.
But my wife got anxious and
sent for a children's special
ist who sent his assistanl-a
young woman who apparent
ly thought I would be pleased
if she showed "real zeal." So,
when I got home, I found
she had ordered for the child
a dose of castor oil; a bottle
of medicine to lower the slight
fever, some calamine lotion
to protect the skin, and some
iced boric acid solution to be
dropped in the child's eyes
every hour throughout the
night.
Whole Family Slept
Partly because I saw no
sense in any of this treatment,
and partly because that day
my wife was so tired and ill
that she was in no shape to
be up all night applying the
medicine, I put my foot down
and said, "None of that." I
took a sleeping tablet: broke
it in three parts and gave
one to the child and the other
two thirds to my wife. As a
result, the whole family slept
well all night, and in the
morning the child woke up
well.

Gresham Families
Flee House Fire " '
Gresham-WPD-A f ire, struck
the home of 13 persons east
of Gresham ' shortly after 3
a.m. today. All 13 escaped un
injured but lost all their pos
sessions. -
Two families living in the
L. C. Bradford home were
awakened by sixyear-old Glo
ria Norris. The child said
there was smoke In the house,
Firemen fjom Multnomah
county and the Boring fire
department were hampered
in firefighting efforts by the
luck of water.
Left homeless by the blaze
were Bradford, Mr. and Mrs.
Norris, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Otis, Clarence Baker, two
Baker children and five Nor
ris children. The children
range in age from 7 months
to 11 years.
Bradford estimated the loss
at $10,000. Cause of the blaze
was undetermined.
