Pregnant Women With
German Measles
Back in 1940, a physician
in Australia, named Gregg, re
ported that a high percentage
of women who had German
measles in the first month or
two of pregnancy had defec
tive children. As years passed
more and more physicians in
America have come to the
conclusion that the situation
here is nowhere near as bad
as it was in Australia. Also,
as I pointed out in a recent
column, in those years in
which German measles is not
epidemic, the virus seems to
be so mild in its effects that
most women who have the
disease shortly after they be
come pregnant give birth to
normal children.
At a recent meeting of the
Central Association of Obstet
ricians and Gynecologists
held at Kansas City, two Tex
as obstetricians pointed out
that during an epidemic of
German measles in Dallas and
Ft. Worth in 1958, 85 per cent
of the babies born to mothers
who had measles in the first
three months of their preg
nancy were normal. This is
certainly cheering.
Drs. Herman I. Kantor and
W. K. Strother of Dallas re
ported having seen 72 wom
en who had had German
measles early in pregnancy.
Therapeutic abortion was in
duced in the cases of 11 wom
en who were too frightened to
go head with their pregnancy.

fects, and one was deaf. This
experience should now cheer
thousands of women who get
badly frightened when they
get German measles early
during pregnancy. Getting it
late In the pregnancy usually
means nothing; the child al
ready is formed. Not a one of
the babies born to 20 women
who had German measles aft
er the first three months of
pregnancy was injured.
Umbilical (Navel) Hernia
Quite a few persons are
born with a weakness in the
abnominal wall around the
navel. As a result, a little bit
of bowel may slip through as
in a rupture in the groin.
Occasionally, if a loop of
bowel gets into the rupture
and gets stuck, the person
will have to be operated on
quickly, in order to save his
life. The experience Drs. L. D.
Gibson and M. R. Gasper re
cently reported shows that
these ruptures often should
be repaired.
The work has to be well
done if the rupture is not to
break down again. Some
youngsters who have a dis
charge from the navel also
must be operated on, if the
discharge comes from a rem
nant of a tube that runs to
the navel during life in the
womb.
