Russian Space
Attempt Expected

tists said today the Soviets
may rocket a man into orbit
or land a robot laboratory on
the moon to coincide with the
Inauguration of Presi
dent John F. Kennedy on
Jan. 20.
Both projects were in their
final stages some months ago,
according to information from
behind the Iron Curtain, and
there are mounting indica
tions that a big new space
project is iminent.
The moon laboratory is
known to have been com
pleted since then, but the
man-in-space venture suffered
a setback when Space Ship
II burned up on reentry
earlier this month.
News reports said Western
Intelligence indicates unusual
activitity is currently taking
place at Soviet satellite
launching bases and that Rus
sian missile monitoring ships
are preparing to move out to
their stations in the Pacific
and Indian oceans.
Balloon-Carried
Telescope Tested
Washington -fl!PD- Scientists
have begun testing a balloon
carried telescope they hope
will unlock some of the se
crets of the universe. It is
theoretically powerful enough
to distinguish two golf balls
15 inches apart at a distance
of 500 miles.
Scientists hope the project,
called Stratoscope II, will
bring back from the fringe of
space the first photos of the
cloud-shrouded surface of
Venus, data to solve the mys
tery of Jupiter's mammoth
red spot and clues to the
birth of stars.
The National Science Foun
dation, the Navy and Prince
ton University disclosed in a
joint statement Wednesday
night that testing of the bal
loon and telescope had start
ed. The scientists hope to send
Stratoscope II up to take pic
tures next fall.
