To Give Play
Children and young people
of the Friends church will
present their Christmas pro
gram Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in

nativity play by the primary
department, : songs and group
readings by the juniors, and

Combining the worship

platform has been designed
with risers so that small chil

comment on the proposed merger of four: major protectant
denominations made earlier this month by Dr. Eugene. Car
son Blake, chief executive officer of the United -Presbyterian
Church In the U.S.A. ; "
Last week the ministers of the other two .denominations
suggested in the merger, expressed i their yiaws of It. 'They
were the Rev. George R. V. Bolster, St. Mark's Episcopal
church, and Dr. George G. Roseberry, First Methodist church.

I think it is a sign of some
thing, good that the proposal
of Dr. Eugene Carson Blake
for the union of four; or more
large' denominations has
stirred so- much interest all
over the country and beyond
it.
Only this week did I have
the opportunity to see and
read in full the text of this
proposal. Only then did it
come to me that this was' a
sermon. It was preached ; by
Dr. Blake, the stated clerk
of - the United Presbyterian
Church, In an Episcopal -Ca
thedral in the presence of
Bishop James A. Pike of the
diocese- of . Northern California.-

The sermon began, like all
good sermons, with a Biblical
tex't. This Is a part worth re
membering. It was from Rom
ans 15:5-7,- and says: in part:
"Now. the God of patience and
consolation - grant you to be
like-minded one toward an
other ' according . . to Jesus
Christ! That ye may with one
mind and with one mouth
glorify God." - . , ;
The motive for union, is not
to have a bigger and stronger
church, ' but to be obedient to
Christ who wants all his fol
lowers to be one. .Too many
times I think we judge the
church by the standards of
the business world , instead of
the other way around. If con
tinuing division is favored we
say that competition . is
healthy. If. unions are advo
cated we say it will be ef
ficient. Rather, our -primary
aim must be to do the will of
God: -. -,
' I am not entirely sure that
the plan proposed by Dr.
Blake for the union of the
Presbyterian Church, the
Episcopal Church and the
United Church of Christ .Is
the best next step. One prol

have is that we have not yet
completed the working out of
our union with the Evange
lical and Reformed church to
form the United' Church of
Christ. But we are pushing it
as fast as we can and our
idea all - along 'has been that
we would then be ready to
join with others.- '-. .

The suggestion of Dr. Eu
gene Carson Blake that the
Episcopal, ' Methodist, Presby
terian and United Churches
of Christ unite has' certainly
started a real controversy,

other as 'though- the children
of God were against each oth
er rather than united against
evil.' He himself indicated he
would be-afraid of-one great
single Protestant denomina
tion, " -' '"".
- What - he was seeking ;for
was the unity of Christ's fol
lowers working together 'in
whatever denomination, ' in
whatever group, rather than
in cut-throat competition- and
denunciation.' There are two
problems Involved, one, ithe
problem; df doctrine, the other
of ecclesiastical organization.
In the matter of doctlne, I
could be ', 'an. Episcopalian,
Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran,
Christian, Naiarene,' or other
kindred groups, .without any
violation of my doctrinal
views. In fact,, 80 per cent of
the Protestant Americans are
in' six . great , denominational
groups and' any one .of us
would be at home in any one
of these groups. As Dr. Blake
indicated, ,all - who ' ,love . the
Lord Jesus Christ and trust
in Him as their, personal Sav
iour would be welcome in the
Presbyterian Church and
would be happy in any church
holding such views. . :y
The problem is basically
organizational. Bishops J.' A.
Pike indicates his - preference
for v the Presbyterian' system
at one point. Dr. Blake indi
cates his belief 'that we need
the system of bishops.'but'he
adds, "The' higher 'the-'blshop
stands in authority,' the less
he should dress and '.act like
an authoritarian."
As a matter of fact, having
worked- ' in- the -Church of
Christ. ..In .China for. many
years where all the denomin
ational' differences were bur
led, I . see -- no problem what
ever in the wbtking together
of Christians' to try to redeem
and transform this world. I
rejoice in. the gro.wthj.and -advancement
of every Christian
denomination as much as I. do
in the ' advancement : of my
own U-n 1 1 e d Presbyterian
Church. Our goal is that we
all be one In loyalty to Christ
as Head of Church rather than
to any one church groupor

Ehrlich will give 'a Christmas meditation at this service,
which is essentially for parsh families and their children
- Christmas eve at 6:30 p.m. the clergy of St. Mark's will
conduct a half-hour Christmas service in the chapel of the
Rogue Valley Hospital for the benefit of such- patients and
rr.embers of the staff as are able to attend. A copy of St.
Luke's Christmas Gospel will be on every meal tray at the
hospital on Christmas day with the compliments and good
wishes of St. Mark's parisn.

Plans Two Programs
: The Foursquare church will
present its annual Christmas
program Sunday. .
Classes - will assemble at
9:45- a.m. for counting and
gift exchanges and will .then
be dismissed to the main audi
torium . where, children will
present the program begin
ning at-10:30 a.m.- The pro
gram is entitled, "The Reason
for Christmas."
. There .will be numbers by
the junior choir, and recita
tions by various classes. The
choir will be accompanied by
Miss Gloria Rassmusen at the
piano and Mrs. Ralph Turner

"A First , Century Christ
mas" is the theme for Sun
day's service at First Church
of the Nazarene, 520 North
Holly st. This will be held at
the vesper hour, 4:30 to 5:30
p.m., as announced by the
Rev. Harold M. Sanner, pas
tor. . .
The entire service will be
by candlelight. A mixed octet
will open the worship hour
by singing "Gloria in excelsis
Deo." Other carol arrange
ments will be featured by this
group. The only instrumental
music which will be used dur
ing the service will be the or
gan. A brief Christmas de
votional will be given by the
pastor and the Lord's Supper
will be served at the close
A full Sunday school hour
and worship service will be
held at First Nazarene in the
morning. Departmental and
class sessions for study of the
Christmas story will be held
at 9:45 a.m. The worship serv
ice will take place at. 11 a.m,
ana will be broadcast over
radio station KDOV. The
pastor's message, will be an
exposition of the opening
verses of the Book of He
brews and his subject is "God
Speaks Again." Music will be
provided by the sanctuary
choir and the male quartet.
