WATCHES
A I
P-4 S!
Washington-UIPD-Don't feel
slighted, but your senator
may never see that Christmas
card you sent him.
And if he sent you one, he
may never have seen it either,
There are just too many
holiday cards coming and go
ing for. the senators to look
at even a fraction of them.
Senatorial mail, normally
heavy anyway, reaches flood
proportions during the holi
days as the cards pour in
from friends and voters.
One Southern senator an
nually receives between 1,500
and 2,000 Christmas cards a
his office here. Another law
maker estimated that he gets
"literally thousands" of
cards.
Only Part of Avalanche
Actually, this is only part
of the avalanche. Most sena
tors get an equal number of
cards at their offices in their
states and at their homes.
What happens to the cards?
They are dumped into card
board boxes as soon as they
arrive.
Eventually, they will be
opened and acknowledged
with a short note.
Some member of each sena
tor's office staff will write the
note and there's a chance the
senator will sign it.
Roseburg Tree Sent

nedy Jr. has been sent to the
president-elect's son from the
town that calls itself "Timber
Capital of the Nation."
The two-and-a-half foot fir

nedy's Palm Beach, Fla., home
as a gift from the Roseburg
Junior Chamber of Com
merce.
A letter to the president
elect urged him to plant the
tree so that it could grow
along with the new Kennedy
baby.
Bachelor Has Family
According lo Cards
Dallas, Tex. - (UPD - Stan
Thomason, an antique dealer,
ran out of Christmas cards. He
bought 50 extra and mailed all
but one without looking at
them.
House after the
Hours after the 49 he mail
ed were on their way, he
looked closely at the one he
kept. It said: "Merry Chirst
mas and happy . New Year
from the five of us."
Thomason is a bachelor. He
is trying to remember the
names of the 49 persons he
sent the cards to and tele
phone them that he still is.
