MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON

FIVE PERSONS DIE - Police and railroad officials look over
the tangled wreckage of a car which, the train's engineer
said, was trying to beat the passenger train to a crossing in
suburban Minneapolis, Minn. Five persons on a lunch break
from a nearby plant were killed instantly. The Winnipeg
bound train, traveling about 65 miles an hour, carried the
car and three of its occupants a half mile from the point of
impact. The other two were thrown from the car.

Christmas Will Come in $2 Package
For Men in Florida Prison Death Row
SATURN ENGINES TESTED
Huntsville, Ala. lUPIlThe
Saturn rocket booster's eight
engines developed 1.3 million
pounds of thrust Tuesday in
a 60-second test firing at the
Marshall Space Flight Center
here. The rocket, too big for
ground or air transportation
to Cape Canaveral for flight
testing, will be ferried to the
Cape soon by river barge.
The fifteenth - century St.
Bacon Church at Haarlem,
near Amsterdam, has a great
organ with four keyboards
and 5,000 pipes.
Raiford Fla.-(UPD-Christmas
comes in a $2 package to the
men on death row at Florida
state prison.
A small bundle of candy,
fruit and nuts will go to each
of the 22 men waiting on
death row. . . the men whose
crimes of murder and passion
make this their last Christ
mas. But no silver bells nor the
laughter of children.
Only some Christmas rib
bon, a touch of tinsel, perhaps
a few cards taped to the grim
corridor which leads to the
heavy steel door and the elec
tric chair in the room beyond.
Yet strange as it may seem,
some of the Christmas spirit
manages to creep in even
here, where every moment of
life is precious.
"It's surprising how much
hope these men can still mus
ter," said the Rev. E. F. May
ton, prison chaplain, who this
year is spending his second
Christmas behind the concrete
and steel walls of the Raiford
penitentiary. 1
"As long is there is 'life,
they still have hope," he said.
Pretty Good Spirits
On death row, as in the
rest of the large prison, most
of the inmates are in "pretty
good spirits" during the holi
day season, the chaplain said.
Part of it probably is psy
chological, he explained.
"These men-most of them
have known they would be
away from their homes and
families on Christmas. So they
have become adjusted to it.
It's not as if it were some
thing unexpected, although of
course there are exceptions,"
said the Rev. Mayton.
Some sink into a melan
choly mood, just as some pe--sons
in the outside world be
come depressed during Christ
mas, he said. "But this isn't
the general rule."

Turkey Dinner
Prison officials do as much
as possible to make Christmas
cheerful for the convicts. This
year, there will be a baked
turkey dinner, special visitor
privileges, movies and ath
letic events, and two perform
ances of a prison-produced
pageant, "No Room at the
Inn."
Another performance, set
for Dec. 20, was open to the
general public.
Christmas Hrees and lights
and other decorations are put
up at various places through
out the compound. There was
talk of placing a tree in the
death house, but the chaplain
said it probably would serve
little purpose.
The condemned men would
not be able to see it anyway
because of the way the cells
are located in the squat, one
story building.

Institute of Chicago which is
listed in the report.
The project's objectives are
to construct boys growth

Dr. R. L. Guiss of F. H
Dammasch Hospital called for
a change in the law permit
ting screening of voluntary
patients from all persons tak
en into the institution under
observation for 30 days.
Dr. Guiss also proposed a
transportation system to the
hospital operated by the state
with charges levied to pa
tients and their -relatives,
He cited remote location of
the hospital near Wilsonville
and the fact that no public
transportation is available
Supt. Amos Reed of Mac-
Laren School for Boys asked
for a change in the law desig
nating him as legal guardian
of the boys in the school in
stead of legal "custodian." He
said this would give him more
needed authority.
Hillcrest School for Girls Is
asking for establishment of a
cosmetic therapy training
program.
Work Campi Asked
The State Correctional In
stitution wants authority to
establish work camps in such
areas as forestry.
The board approved discon
tinuance of the cannery pro
gram at the state penitenti
ary. Secretary of State How
ell Appling Jr. said the can
nery results in a "defect" on
the total present operation.
He said that at the peak of
the canning season 125 pri
soners are used meaning that
many men are pulled off more
responsible jobs.
Gov. Mark Hatfield agreed
that as for the rehabilitation
aspect cannery does not "add
anything."
The board voted 2-1 with
Appling dissenting for the
state to take over the canteen
concession at the State Hos
pital. The canteen is now op
erated by a private vendor.
