LIGHT BULBS INSTALLED - Working on
scaffolding at the very top of the 70-foot
National Community Christmas tree on the
Ellipse, behind the White House, back
ground, Paul Barran, right, assisted by
Gene Honaker, installs light bulbs in the
star which tops the Douglas Fir tree from
Oregon. President Eisenhower will throw
a switch Friday to light the 6,000 multi
colored bulbs on the tree and officially open
the annual Christmas Pageant of Peace.

Small Worlds
Around Us
. By Lynn M. Watkins
It Wasn't the Thunder
That Soured the Milk
One of the most colorful
and interesting folklore tales
of early rural America, was
one that has persisted in many
sections of our country to this
day, is the legend of the sour
milk the belief that milk al
ways turned sour whenever
there was a thunder and light
ning storm.
Actually, milk did sour
quicker during the storms, but
the thunder and lightning
didn't do it. Milk at the time
was stored in what was called
a spring house, a small build
ing built over a spring or
even a small creek if one was
handy. Some spring houses
were built around a pump.
The fresh milk in tin con
tainers was immersed in
the cool water and kept there
until it could be transported
to what at the time was called
a creamery.
Warm, Humid
Before and, of course, dur
ing an eletcrical storm, the
weather was warm and hu
mid, called by the farmer,
"muggy weather". This heat
and high humidity actually
soured the milk and shorten
ed its keeping time. Back
then, the milk was not pas
teurized before it was taken
to the milk depot. This, too,
added to the chances that it
would sour..
At the same time, too, there
was a superstition regarding
the habits of a common snake
that was called the milk
snake. The reptile was usually
found near a milk house if
it could find one. Some peo
ple even claimed1 that this
snake derived its name "milk
snake" because "it milked
cows in the pasture."
Actually the snake never
did such a thing, and it was
only in the milkhouse because
it was comfortably cool in
there.
People Didn't Care
At the time no one had ever
taken the trouble or had the
instruments to compute the
number of electrical storms
that occur in any region;
neither did people care how
many storms took place over
a state or in the world. Prob
ably it's a good thing, too; the
truth would have scared those
simple folks half to death.
Christmas Check

agment since 1957, and pres

face deposit of gypsum, When
baked, the soft white gypsum
sand becomes pure plaster of
paris.
Now, with measuring de
vices, it has been discovered
that thunder storms are really
"big deals." It is believed, and
is known, that about 16 mil
lion thunder storms bombard
the earth and the sky above,
every year. That would 'fig
ger' about 45,000 a day a
heap of commotion and a
heap of sour milk if you're a
believer in legends.
