EARLY PEEKER - About to take an early peck inside one
of her Christmas gifts is six-year-old Elizabeth Fulliam of
Boston, Mass. Like all other youngsters the curious lass had
to see what Santa had brought her. Unfortunately, she got
only as far as the ribbon when discovered.

Oil Industry
Asked To Offer
Law Amendments
Salem -IUPII- Gov. Mark Hat
field and Attorney General
Robert Y. Thornton Tuesday
invited the entire oil industry
to suggest amendments to Ore
gon law required before the
state can proceed In develop
ing its offshore lands for oil
and gas.
Shell Oil Co. in November
asked the Oregon Land Board
to negotiate a lease to look
for oil on the 800,000 acre sub
merged lands extending from
the Oregon coast three miles
out to sea.
Held Not Legal
The board, with Halfield as
chairman, asked Thornton for
an opinion as to whether this
was legal and Thornton said
it was not.
Thornton said under exist
ing law the stale has no power
to enter into such a lease and
recommended that the 1981 1
legislature which meets Jan.
9 amend the statutes.
The land board and Thorn
ton met Tuesday with Shell
Oil Co. representatives and
advised them of the status.
Spokesmen for two other oil
firms, Richfield and Texaco,
also attended the meeting
Open Bid Preferred
Shell said Initially it would
like to negotiate an exclusive
lease but Hatfield has indi
cated a preference for
open bid system.
Thornton is drafting en
abling legislation and will
submit it to the land board.
Both he and Hatfield said
they welcome recommenda
tions from the oil Industry
itself.

Los Angelcs-IUPD-Testlmony
begins today before a jury of
nine women and three men
hearing charges that Bing
Crosby's son, Dennis, father
ed the daughter of a former
beauty contestant. I
Milton Zerin. attorney fori
Marilyn Scott, 28, asked each
juror before they were chosen
late Tuesday If they were will
ing to disregard the fact that
the defendant s dad is as
much a part of Americana as
Babe Ruth."
Zcrinsald the only issue at
question was whether Dennis,
26, was the father of Miss
Scott's daughter, Denis Mi-
chele, 3.
Jury Won't Worry
He extracted statements
the from the Jurors saying they
would not worry about pos
s i b 1 e "embarrassment" to
Bing Crosby while consider
ing a verdict.
Dennis denied fathering the
child. He had been paying
$350 monthly under a court
order pending outcome of the
suit.
Zcrin said Dennis paid Miss
Scott $450 or $500 in March,
1D57, when she first told him
she was pregnant. The child

viewed as very favorable
omens by the pros, especially
in the face of a rather pallid
business outlook.
Investors Research reports
that these people have not
shouted "bull market" in so
many words but "are looking
for something very big."
To them, IR says, the mar.
ket picture has crystallized
and It is a matter of time un
til the preliminary indications
joll into a favorable environ-
ment for the market as
wljole.
Some improvement in th
bond market is likely early in
1961, but no return to the
very low yields seen during
the 1957-58 recession is in
prospect, according to United
Business Service. It forecasts
a moderate decline in bond
prices during the second halt
of 1961, and for the year
as a whole the trend is expect
ed to be slightly down.
James F. Hughes of Auchin
closs, Redpath & Parker
writes that there Is justifica
tion for believing that the dis
appointing performance of th
stock marKct had more to do
with the business recession
than fundamental economlo
factors. Now that the techni
cal background is extremely
favorable it is conceivable
that an encouraging advance
in the stock market could
prove to be an important psy
chological factor in reversing
the declining trend in indus
trial activity, Hughes says.
