Five Oregonians
Die in Accidents

At least five persons met
accidental deaths in Oregon
during the week end, four in
traffic and one by drowning.
Constanzo Bianco, 27, a
Newport duck hunter, drown
ed Saturday in Devil's Lake
at Delake. The body was recovered.
Mrs. Sarah Charlotte Long,
G5, Alsca, was killed Sunday
in a two-car accident one half
mile south of Alsea.
Edward Neuman, 83, Port
land, was killed Saturday
night in Portland when struck
by a car. Jerry Mehrlick, 14,
Portland, died in a two-car
accident in Portland Friday
night and Genevieve Logan
bill, Salem, was killed Friday
night in a one-ear mishap

Kefauver Asks
Tighter Control
On Drug Industry

tee has called for more federal
regulations to protect the
American public from phony
medicines.
Kefauver, (D-Tcnn.), said
Sunday night the Food and
Drug Administration should
be required to go beyond its
present' practice of simply de
claring a drug non-poisonous.
He said the FDA should be
required to show that a new
medicine was worthwhile.
Such a regulation would
"stop a lot of this quackery,"
he said.
Kefauver also said his anti
trust and monopoly subcom
mittee's hearings into the drug
industry earlier this year
have already done an "enor
mous amount of good."
The publicity of the hear
ings, he said, had caused a 15
per cent reduction in the
prices of a broad range of
antibiotics which could save
the American people "some
where around $70 or S80 mil
lion a year in penicillin and
many, many other drugs."
