Old Ebcnezer was correct.
Christmas is humbug.'
It's seasonal dementia
brought on by the inces
sant playing of Christmas
carols. They poison us with
nostalgia and turn us into
children again.
Once more we feci love
pouring into our young hearts
as warm and vibrant as a sun
beam. The world is a silver tree
hung with baubles, all for
'us to pick. Everybody be
lieves in Santa Claus. Every
body loves everybody.
Well, we're not falling for
the old razzzmataz this Yule
tide at our house.
We're too old and too cyn
ical and too worried about
steel production, the Dow
Jones averages and the gross
national product.
It's easier than you might
suppose to cast off these silly
old traditions and view Christ
mas in a practical light.
I merely called a family
council and proposed a plan
by which we could enjoy the
holiday without running up a
mess of bills and filling the
place with white elephants.
' "Why don't we," I said,
"just declare a few tilings
that we need and would have
to buy sooner or later any
way? That way nobody would
get something he didn't want,
and yet he wouldn't know
exactly what he was going to
get. so it would still be a

, Adam, many years ago,
planted some poplar trees
near his property line in order
to provide a windbreak. One
day Baker, his next door
neighbor, noticed that the
foundation of one of his out
buildings had developed sev
eral cracks.. Upon further in
vestigation, Baker discovered
that the cracks were caused
because the roots of Adam's
poplar trees had spread and
were growing beneath the
building's foundation. Baker,
unable to come to an agree
ment with Adam, filed suit
for damages for injury to his
buildings.
The Court Held: No recov
ery for Baker. A landowner
can plant shade trees and in
noxious plants on his own
land and not be guilty of cre
ating a nuisance merely be
cause the roots or branches
of the tree or plant enter the
land of his neighbor.
The planting of trees can
not be enjoined and damage
resulting from the spread of
roots and branches is not ac
tionable. However, the in
jured party is not without
remedy. He can cut off the in
truding branches and roots
without being liable to the
tree owner.

"I think so, Pa," said Doug.
"I guess I need some adhesive
tape."
"Adhesive tape?" I said,
puzzled. "Why's that?" I
dared hope that at, last he had
decided to become a doctor
instead of a professional short
stop.
"My bat's busted," he said.
"Maybe if I taped it up it
would last until I could get
a job and earn enough for a
new one."
"That's the spirit," I said.
"We'll see, boy."
His brother had been think
ing, too.
"I'd like a new barrel to
put the cans out in," he said.
"If that's too expensive, could
my tennis shoes be half
soled?" "Ha, ha," I laughed, falling
into the spirit of the season
despite myself. "We 11 see,
we'll see." .

"Who, me?" she said. They
always say who me like that.

of quarters," she said, "for
the laundromat."
I wonder if they were kid
ding me. I bet they go out
and spend my money on gold,
frankincense and myrrh.

rettes headed causes today of
a spate of week end fire deaths
across the nation.
A United Press Internation
al count showed at least 34
persons burned to death or
fatally injured in fires since
Saturday night. At least eight
of the victims were children. I
Florida and Texas each i
recorded six fire deaths. Four
persons died in Kentucky, I
three in Missouri, two each in i
Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, I
Michigan, Maine and Georgia, i
and one each in California, '
New Hampshire and Okla
homa. Deputy Sheriff George
Owens, 21, his pregnant wife
and his wife's mother were
found suffocated Sunday in
Dade County, Florida. Fire
men said a gas heater, used to
fight cold holiday tempera
tures along the peninsula, ap
parently consumed the oxygen
in the Owens home.
Three Children Die
At Springdale, Mo., a sub
division of St. Charles, faulty
Christmas tree wiring was
blamed for a fire that killed
Patty Beck, 9, and her broth
ers, John, 7. and Kenneth, 3,
Sunday. Intense heat in the
children's bedroom defeated a
rescue attempt by the young
sters' father Joseph. -
In Texas, Herman Pinks,
35, and his three daughters,
twins Corcne and Pauline, and
Virginia, 10 months, died in a
fire which swept through their
Tyler home Saturday night.
At Houston, Carleen Head. 5,
and her sister, Donna, 3, died
Sunday morning in another
home fire.
A S1.5 million blaze in a
block-square recreation center
at Louisville. Ky., Sunday
killed three firemen. Capt.
Joseph Buren, Sgt. Jesse Wil
son and Fireman Riley Prior.
Betty Level, 70, died in an
other Louisville fire which
consumed her frame home.
Cigarettes were believed to
have started at least four
fatal fires, taking lives in Los
Angeles, Chicago, Norman,
Okla., and Savannah, Ga.
Couple Burned Fatally
A South Omaha, Neb., cou
ple burned to death early
Sunday. Investigators traced
the center of he blaze to a
Christmas tree in their living
room.
In the woods of north-central
Maine, Kenneth London,
26, and Vernon Martens, 16,
were killed in a home fire at
Mattawamkeag that also in
jured five persons, including
three firemen.
Two victims of an Onamia,
Minn., fire Sunday managed
to crawl to within four feet
of their front door before
being overcome by flames and
heat. The dead were identified
as Mrs. Mary Foxx and Harry
Mitchell, both about 38.
In Waltonville, 111., owner
G.E. Rollinson, 45, suffocated
in his combination grocery-1
service station.
In other fires, Walter Fuler,
84, died in the ruins of his
one-room cabin near Amherst,
N.H., and John W. Proctor
died in a fire at his Miami,
Fla., home.

Salem-(UPU-Sen. Alice Cor
belt (D-Portland) clarified her
position Saturday on the bat
tle for Oregon Senate Presi
dent between Sens. Harry
Boivin. (D-Klamath Falls) and
Alfred Corbett (D-Portland).
Both Boivin and Corbett
have claimed her vote.
Mrs. Corbett said that if Al
fred Corbett receives 15 votes
for President-that would be
half-she would "be the 16th
giving him the majority. Oth
erwise, she said, she is pledg
ed to Boivin. Boivin claims 19
votes, including Mrs. Cor
bett's, three more than neces
sary to win.

man held up Ed's Market in
southeast Salem Saturday
night after striking the son of
the former owner and lying
up the store manager and two
employees. . .
Cash and checks totaling
$6,300 were taken 'from the
safe.
Timothy C. Hawkins, 17,
Jefferson, was hospitalized for
head injuries after being
struck by the gunman as he
fled. He is the son of Edward
Hawkins, former store owner.
John W. Smith, 39, store
manager, Salem, and two em
ployees were leaving the store
when the gunman appeared
and forced them back inside.
They were tied up and the
robber went through the safe.

Portlander Held
On Murder Charge
Portland - OIPIl - Simon P.
Johnson, 39, Portland, has
been charged with murder in
the slaying of a 40-year-old
laborer Saturday night.
The victim, Robert Scott.
Portland, was found with a
three-inch gash in his neck.
He was dead on arrival at
Emanuel hospital.
