Public Hearings Called by City Council; Other Action Taken
The Medford city council
Thursday night, among its
items of miscellaneous bus-
t lness, gave the engineering de
partment the authority to
draw on the general fund for
,' engineering costs.
The department can now
. draw on the general fund to
pay for immediate engineer
ing costs incurred on special
assessment projects, and then
reimburse the fund when the
assessments are paid. The ac
tual monies will come from
surplus funds in the Improve
ment Bond fund.
Following public hearings.
the council ordered the instal
lation of a water main on
Oakwood dr, from Glen Oak
court to Barneburg. rd. and
on Barneburg rd. from Oak
wood dr. to Woodlawn dr.;
and it also ordered Stevens
st. to be paved from Crater
Lake ave., 1,446 feet west.
A request to annex to the
city some property in the
Chestnut st. area was deferred
until the council's second
meeting in January, because
the property owners have not
yet carried out several con-

featured on the Jackson Coun
ty Tuberculosis and Health as
sociation's "Adventures in
Medicine" television show at
5 o'clock this afternoon.
The bi-weekly programs on

Medical Society and station
KBES-TV, have continued
without interruption for near
ly six years, and it has be
come a tradition at Chirstmas
time to feature the Medford
schools in a special program
of Christmas music,

Families Available
For Holiday Baskets
Organizations and individ
uals planning to care for a
needy family at Christmas
are urged to contact the
Christmas bureau at the Red
Cross building, 60 Hawthorne
ave., Medford, SPring 2-4405,
this week, bureau officers
have announced.
Bureau officials said more
than 100 families remain to
be taken care of. Groups and
individuals caring for a fam
ily are asked to clear through
the Christmas bureau to avoid
duplication.
They said contributions to
help fill Christmas baskets
still are needed by the bureau.

Mother, Daughter
Hurt in Accident
Two persons received slight
injuries resulting from a two
car accident Friday at Summit
and Haven sts.
Injured were Evelyn Toy
nette Watson, 3390 Ross lane,
Medford, and her passenger,
her daughter, Marilyn Toy
nette Watson, 19. Mrs. Wat
son received a bruised upper
lip and her daughter a bump
on the head and leg bruises.
Medford police said appar
ently a car driven by Betty
Louise Twedell, 203 Wilson
rd., Central Point, was going
east on Haven st. and a car
driven by Mrs. Watson was
travelling north on Summit
ave. The Twedeli car appar
ently entered the intersection
a fraction of a second before
the Watson car and they col
lided in the north bound lane.
Considerable damage result
ed to the Twedell car and to
the. Watson car's left front
corner and left side, police
said. Betty Twedell was cited
for failure to yield the right
of way and Mrs. Watson for
not having an operator's li
cense in her possession, Med
ford police said.

called for bids on a water

The council approved issu
ance of a liquor license to
Shakey's Pizza parlor, which
proposed to build at Jackson
st. and Central ave. An ex
tension of time was granted
for construction of 10th st.
from Riverside ave. to Wil
lamette ave.
At the request of City Man
ager Robert A. Duff, the coun
cil directed the fire marshal
to determine if a barn and
fence located on East Jackson
st. adjacent to Oregon terrace
is a fire or traffic hazard.
The barn and fence are
owned by O. H. Bengston, ac
cording to a petition bearing
31 signatures which was turn
ed into the city manager re
questing the city to remova
the structures.
