Rise in Juvenile
Delinquency Told
Washington-Juvenile delin
quency court cases in the na
tion increased by some 2 per
cent in, 1959, according to
the children's bureau of the
U.S. department of health,
education, and welfare.
Last year's Increase, how
ever, was the smallest report
ed during the past decade,
even though the delinquency
rate has risen steadily for
11 consecutive years.
Department officials noled
that, contrary to trends in
previous years, the delinquen
cy case increase in 1959 didn't
exceed the rise in the child
population, which rose by 5
per cent among the 10" to 17
age group.
The date is compiled by the
bureau with the cooperation
of a representative sampling
of juvenile courts nation-wide.
The 1959 findings roughly
parallel information issued
recently by the federal bureau
of investigation-which show
ed a 4 per cent increase in
juvenile police arrests over
1958.
Noted especially was the
fact that, while juvenile ar
rests and court cases have
more than doubled since
1948, the population in this
age group has increased by
less than one-half.
