on Christmas for about 00 per
cent of its annual volume
which is expected to be 3 to 5
per cent over last year's $1.6
billion.
This continues a trend in
evidence most of the postwar
period, according to "T h e
Business Situation," a month
ly review prepared for Tri-
continental Corp. and the
Broad Street group o mutual
iujids.
It noted that the factors
that have accounted for tills
favorable growth trend arc ex
peeled to continue to operate
. iii the years ahead.
One of the more Important
factors is the rapid increase
in (he number of young peo

lion in the 1950-59 period,
and is expected to grow at the
rale of one million a year
over the next five years, the
'review stated.
Other significant factors are
the rising standard of living,
which has been reflected par

' more expensive toys, and the
trend to the suburbs and out
door living, which has opened
up many new markets.
The industry's success In
constantly developing new

the steadily Increased recog
nition of the educational value
of toys has broadened and
stabilized the industry's mar
kets.
The addition of many
thousands of toy outlets in
recent years, such as super.
markets, toy specialty stores
and toy departments of hard
ware, auto supply, drug and
stationery stores, also have
been a boon to sales.
But the review said the toy
manufacturers are not with
out challenges. Profit mar
gins tend to be relatively low
because of keen competition,
the large and constantly
changing variety of products,
and highly developmental,
promotional and other sellings
costs. Toy imports compound
this problem, particu 1 a r 1 y
among the low-priced lines.
Much of this keen competi
tion is brought about by the
composition of the industry,
the review emphasized. It
pointed out that about 1,400
firms turn out toys and games,
and the vast majority are
small family - owned com
panies. And among the relatively
few publicly held firms, some
only have a partial stake in
the business. These include
American Machine & Foundry
and A. G. Spaulding. Milton
Bradley, A. C. Gilbert and
Lionel are some of the older
companies which derive the
bulk of their revenues from
toys.
Since last fall, at least five
of Santa's helpers have float
ed slock issues - Aurora Plas
tics, Eldon Industries, Mattle,
Remco Industries, and Au
dion - Emence. T h e review
noted that these five firms are
largely newcomers to the toy
business, and have done par
ticularly well, actually more
so than the large older firms.
