Mrs. A. N. - This going
aieady business at age 14 is
ridiculous.
Minna N. - Having a steady
means more fun in my crowd.
Mrs. A. N. - Thinking of
Minna and Rick together,
sometimes as much as 14
hours a day, has our hair on
end! They're 14 and in the
same class. As if the physical
proximity weren't enough
how can Minna stand such
wall around herself which
keeps away all other kids who
might be her close friends?
What has happened to her
childhood? These kids write
notes to each other as "Mrs.
Rick" or "Mrs. Billy." And
they fight over boys the way
we used to fight over the last
cruller In the bakeshop! When
I was Minna's age, girls went
around with girls and' boys
with boys, and the twosomes
were only for parties and the
movies.
We're thinking of transfer
ring Minna to an ail girl
school so that she'll major in
homework Instead of boys.
What's the rush? We feel we
must do something to slow
her down.
a boy, or who can't get any
one. I know that my girl
friends and I like to know
where we stand with boys
It's a nice feeling to know
you're connected with some'
one.
Minna N.-My parents don't
understand what going steady
means. It means I have some
one to do homework with and
when there's a dance or a
party, we go together.
My parents have nothing to
worry about. In fact, my
marks are better than ever
because Rick is very smart
and he helps me. And we
don't sit around alone, mush
ing and all, as they think.
All my friends have steadies
and we just go along with the
bunch.
Maybe there are girls who
don't want to go steady with
T Council - Going steady
versus playing the field in
volves the choice of security
versus adventure.
So long as matters physica
are under control, the only
danger in the exclusivity of
these 14-year-old duos is the
foreshortening of their social
outlook. "Security" is the
watchword and goal of the
over-6Ss. The teens are for
daring, exploring, branching
out, discovering. Minna and
Rick might go further as teen
age Uvewires by keeping their
contacts more varied than
they can be In the social cul-
de-sac of ' going steady.
There's no need for Mrs
N. to have Minna transferred.
"Steadies' are the big thing
in all-girls' schools too, only
they're talked and dreamed
about instead of produced.
Having a steady fills sev
eral Important needs for some
young people. It permits them
to go through the Imitative
motions of adults having "an
affair." And at the same time
as Minna and Rick can dram
atize themselves as budding
grownups, they can remain
two scared kids, dependent
and clinging to each other for
courage in social situations.
Since "all the kids" - that
composite tyrant paraded be
fore parents - go steady or
teadily, Minna and Rick have
the added pleasure of "status."
They belong.
Mrs, N. s best course would
be to accept the pattern of
'steadies" as comforting to a
girl with Minna's insecurities

Since tht announcement of our ntwtsf Veterans' hono
rarium, the Mtmory Gardens Flag Program, we have had
many Inqulrfes regarding tlJg'bflfty requirements. The follow
ing question and resulting answer should explain this fully.
What ire the eligibility requirements for participation
In Memory Gardens Flag Program?
At first, wa had decided that only those Veterans who
were Interred In our gardens would be honored. How
ever, after several families had inquired as to the pos
sibility of including tht flags of their loved qnes who
were Interred overseas, at sea, or in another part of
this country, -we decided to broaden the eligibility re
quirements. Flags will be accepted and flown in honor of the mem
ory of those deceased veterans who:
1) are Interred within MEMORY GARDENS MEMO
RIAL PARK!
2) are interred at sea, or in another country!
3) were missing in action and declared dead!
, 4) are interred In cemeteries not In the Immediate

By HENRY RAYMONT
Washington IUPD Many
prominent Democratic lead
ers in Latin America fear a
resurgence of strong-armed
military regimes as a reaction
to the left-wing agitation
sweeping the area.
They are mindful of a re
sidue of influential army of
ficers who are convinced that
Democratic governments are
too weak to deal effectively
with Communist subversion
If this belief should overrule
the Democratic forces in Latin
America's military circles, it
could reverse the trend to
ward constitutional govern
ment registered in the West
ern Hemisphere over the past
five years.
Simmering Discontent
Political moderates cite sim
mering discontent over pov
erty and economic backward
ness as the underlying source
of the current wave of unrest
But the example of Cuban
Premier Fidel Castro's radical
revolution and his wide
spread propaganda machine
are held to be its Immediate
cause.
The recent riots In Vene
zuela have been attributed to
Communist and left-wing stu
dent with the possible help
of Cuban agitators,
President Romulo Betan-
court dramatically articulated
his fear of a right-wing re
action by calling on the or
ganization of American States
(OAS) to investigate an al
leged plot involving exiled
Venezuelan officers to launch
an armed attack against him
from the Dominican Republic.
It is not considered impos
sible, however, that Betan
court will ask for OAS action
against Cuba if he finds
enough evidence of Cuban in
volvement In this week's stu
dent riots.
Belief Spreading
The belief that energetic
action against communist sub
version Is needed if only to
forestall right-wing reaction
Is rapidly spreading among
Latin American moderates
and even left-wing advocates.
There Is a wide-spread the
ory, shared by many U.S.
government officials, that the
Communist design is to pre
cipitate military take-overs.
Their ultimate objective, how
ever, would be to stimulate
popular uprising against the
new regimes and then estab
lish Castro-type governments
where the will of the people
Is expressed by mass demon
strations rather than by popu
lar elections.
The open drive by Commu
nists and Castro sympathizers
to topple Betancourt's govern
ment has already alarmed
many Latin American liberals

Statement Made in
East German Court
Berlin IUPD - "I love freedom
more than I love my life,"
Josef Flade, then a boy of 18,
told a Communist East Ger
man court in Dresden one
gloomy fall day in 1951.
A slight smile masked his
anxiety but his hands trem
bled as he made his last state
ment before judgement was
passed.
His crime: Being caught
putting up anti-Communist
oosters. His sentence under
Communist justice: Death.
"Thousands will avenge
my death," he cried out from
the floodlighted stage of a
ballroom turned into a court
room for the show trial.
Prediction Proves Correct
Flade's prediction proved
correct in a way, although
not as he believed. His sear
ing words touched off an in
ternational storm of public
protest against the death sent
ence, much of it coming from
the Afro-Asian nations the
Communists were attempting
to woo.
As the protests mounted,
East German officials com
muted the sentence to 15
years.
Last week Flade, looking
older than his years and suf-
and needs, but to keep trying
without nagging - to show
Minna more enriching and or
iginal ways to remove the
insecurities and fill the needs.
Facing a group as a loner
takes more bravery than fac
ing it by two's, and the aver
age 14-year-old hasn't much
of that kind of aplomb.

High Point, N.C. -ItlPD- Po

open the safe and settled for
other available loot - a $25
check and a box of cookies.

to condemn Cuba's activities.
They fear that similar un

Colombia and Peru where
Democratic governments are
trying to rebuild their coun
tries from the chaos left be
hind from years of military
dictatorship.

"It took me five years to
