Business Slack
Washinttton - WPIt - Savings
re booming It business isn't
The thrift boom is at least
partly responsible for the
present slack in many lines of
business,
Government statistics show
Americans have more than
S307 billion - a record - in
savings. Recently, the figures
indicate, they have been acta
ing to their savings at a faster
rate.
Shown in Reporli
These facts were pointed up
by two reports from the Fed
eral Home Loan Bank Board,
a government agency which
regulates savings and loan as
sociations. A third report showed
manufacturing firms sales
and profits tumbled during
the summer.
The trend toward thrift un
doubtedly has contributed to
the slump in manufacturing
which began early in the sum
mer and is expected to con
tinue for Borne months. When
consumers save more, they
soend less. When they buy
less, stores purchase fewer
goods from factories.
One of the bank board re
ports showed that by Sept. 30
Americans had accumulated
record $306,954,000,000 in
major forms of savings: thrift
deposits, life insurance, TreaS'
ury savings bonds
In addition, millions of
families have built up invest
ments In their own homes
worth billions of dollars,
Many families consider month
ly mortgage and life insurance
payments their only form of
regular savings
The report showed that in
July, August and September
the savings total rose by $4.3
billion - an unusually large
increase for summer months
when people usually are
spending heavily on vacations.
