Cr i Bashfulness
Gets Him Into Trouble
. There's one type of crab
you may be unfamiliar with,
the one that covers its face
when it is scared.
But the one mat either
blushes or is really bashful
is the one someone named the
"tiger crab" because of the
yellow stripes on the shell.
This truly aquatic crab is real
ly pretty as far as coloration
is concerned. , .
When he becomes scared or
bashful, he pulls his front
claws in close to his face and
tries to hide behind them. Ac
tually he closes up about as
tight as a box, for which he
folds his forearms over his
homely face, he also pulls in
his legs, and turtle-like, is all
"closed up."
This instinctive and prob
ably protective measure would
appear to be a "face-saver,"
but it deally backfires about
nine times out of 10 and the
poor crab gets it in the neck,
or at least about in the place
where his neck would be if
he had one. Actually, in try
ing to protect himself he
leaves himself wide open.
Living as he does, in rela
tively deep water, where he
spends his time crawling
along the bottom, he often
becomes alarmed, and quick
ly covers his face, pulls in
his legs, and hopes that ev
erything is going to be all
right, but his enemies are sel
dom fooled. And some of his
enemies are other than living
creatures that inhabit his wa
tery home. Deep running
waves may tumble him end
over end. And when he is
scared and closed in like a
box, he becomes sort of ball
like. In this position he rolls
easily and tidal currents make
a plaything of his body.
He's Helpless :
He becomes as helpless as
a cork in a whirlpool. His in
stinct has become an agency
leading to his destruction. As
a consequence, the rolling may
continue until he is cast up on
a beach, or is stranded high
and dry on a sandbar.
To be truthful, this . crab
is not "bashful," he has more
of the so - called ostrich in
stinct. Since his face is hidden
he may think he is "out of
sight." He works on the the
ory that anything he can't
see, can't hurt him. In many
respects he is like so many of
us.
If there is a moral in the
actions of the "bashful" crab
it would be: "Keep looking;
it won't hurt any worse if we
see it coming."
