Portland - (DTD - A family of
six escaped from their burn
ing home in night clothes
early today.
Flames and smoke from the
fire, which broke out about
dawn, awakened the children
of Walter Hufschmidt and the
youngsters' cries awakened
the parents, firemen said.
The children, -Cindy, 4
Dale 6; Jim, 8; and Alan, 10;
ran from the blazing one-story
home in pajamas. Hufschmidt
said he and his wife were un
able to save anything.
Hufschmidt, an unemployed
telephone installer, said the
fire apparently started when
blanket on one of the chil
dren's beds fell against an
electric wall heater.
He estimated loss at $8,000
which he said was covered by
insurance.
A fire Wednesday night
caused $10,000 damage to a
one-story apartment building.
Smokers' carelessness was
listed as the cause.

cases the person never knew
he had the disease until It
was discovered accidentally,
when an x-ray man made a
film for some reason or other,
In those cases I think the per
son should not be too fright
ened because the disease may
never bother him, and it
won't kill him. Seeing that
the disease is hereditary; and
the mechanism of it is un
known, we haven't any logical
treatment for It. Hence in
most cases the main treat
ment must be for pain. Plenty
of aspirin should help.
FDA Orders Hoxsey To Quit
Through the years many
people have written to ask
me why, If the medical pro
fession was sure that Hox-
sey's medicine (a laxative
with a little Iodide) could have
no effect on cancer his so
called clinic wasn't closed up.
An answer was given by the
author of that remarkable
book on the so-called "Dr."
Brlnkley. For years Brinkley
kept raking In millions of
dollars from unhappy people
of the sort who will say
"Yes, I know he is a ruthless
quack with no knowledge of
medicine, but when you are
desperate and no doctor will
promise you anything, why
not risk $500 on a gamble that
he may have something?"
And, as the author of the
book pointed out, when a man
is making millions, and has a
dozen able lawyers with
strong political connections,
reaching up even into Wash
ington, D.C., it is almost im
possible to make him obey
the laws against swindling,
and against practicing medi
cine without any knowledge
of the art. It is easy to get
around the law against the
unlicensed practice of medi
cine. All a person has to do
is to hire a few old broken-
down, poor specimens of doc
tors to serve as a front for
him. They form the Clinic,
while the layman behind the
scenes talks the suckers into
paying, each of them, several
hundreds of dollars for a
worthless minor operation, or
a few cents worth of a laxa
tive, or (according to govern
ment chemists) a bottle of
plain ordinary waterl This last
cure for cancer" was sold
to thousands of patient.
After 10 years of expensive
effort, F.D.A. Chief, George
P. Larrick announces that the
person who ostensibly was
running the "Clinic" in Dallas
where Hoxsey's medicine was
sold, has agreed to close up
and quit. Larrick said that "It
is estimated that cancer pa
tients have paid over $50 mil
lion for this wortlhess treat
ment."
Someone will immediately
take his place because more
than half of our people love
quacks and quackery; they
want someone to go to when
they are hopelessly 111. When
that day comes, they want
someone "to do something"
and promise something.
The Growth Hormone
Many years ago my old
friend and fellow mountain-
climber, Professor Herbert
Evans of the University of
California, and his group, iso
lated from the pituitary gland
at the base of the brain and
above the cavity of the nose,
a chemical which, when given
to a little dachshund, soon
turned him into a great big
hound. As I have said before
in this column, we doctors
immediately wanted to get
hold of some of this hormone
to help short boys to grow
taller. Some of the hormone
was made from the easily
available pituitary glands of
cattle, but soon It was found
that this variety of the drug
is so different from that of
men that it has little if any
effect on boys.
Then, some of the chemical
was made from human pitul
taries and this worked beau
tifully. With it an 11-year-old
girl soon grew 434 inches. Be
cause it is so very desirable
that some very short children
grow taller, Dr. Robert F.
Escamilla of San Francisco,
has started a pituitary bank
All that a kindly person
needs do is to instruct his
family that immediately after
his (or her) death the pituitary
gland be removed and turned
over to the "bank." Because
the amount of the human
growth hormone as yet avail
able is so very small, no one
should write me for some; I
haven't any and it Is not for
sale anywhere.
