Program for Band
Concert Sunday
Announced Today
A 20-selection program fea
turing a variety of music was
announced today for the Med
ford High school's ninth an
nual "pop concert" Sunday,
Dec. 11, at 2 p.m.
I. A. Mirick, instrumental
music supervisor, said that
proceeds from the benefit pre
sentation would be used to fi
nance the band's trip to the
annual East-West Shrine foot
ball game in San Francisco
late this month. For the past
several years, the local mus
icians have been invited to
participate at the football
event and this year they will
present a special show.
Tickets are still being sold
by band members, and they
may also be purchased at the
door, according to Mirick.
Prices are $1 for adults and
50 cents for students. Doors
open at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Selections Noted
Selections to be performed
by the band include John
Philip Sousa's "Semper Fidel
is March;" "Emblem of Un
ity," by J. J. Richards; selec
tions from "Green Willow,"
by Frank Loesser; an over
ture, "Peter Schmoll," by
C. M. VonWeber; and Sousa's
"Free Lance march."
In addtion, a trumpet trio,
"Tropical Trumpets," featur
ing Mike Johnston, Bob
Heide, and Ron Ingram; a
saxophone solo, "Piggly-Wig-gle,"
by Miss Linda Hess; a
cornet solo, "Conversation for
Cornet," performed by Bob
Heide; and a tympani solo by
Harry Taylor, "Tympani
Tom."
Vocal pieces will include
"When Allen-A-Dale Went A
Hunting," de Pearsall; "Oh,
What a Beautiful City," Boat
ner; "Choral Scherzo on a
Well Known Theme," Kublik;
"American Street Cries,'.' Sieg
meister, "One Little Candle,"
by Mysels and Roach; selec
tions from "Guys and Dolls,"
as arranged by Warnick; and
a joint presentation with the
band of the "Battle Hymn of
the Republic," with the set
ting by Peter J. Wilhousky,
Conclude Program
The MHS varsity band will
conclude their program with
"A Westchester Overture," by
Clare Grundman; the Medford
High fight song; and "Our Na
tional Anthem."
Radio KMED will record
most of the show for later
broadcast, tentatively sched
uled for Sunday afternoon or
evening. Russ Jamison, Dick
Moody, and Ellis Feinstein
all KMED employees are In
charge of writing and produc
ing the show, as well as re
cording it Sunday.
Assisting also in the show
are the high school band maj
orettes, directed by Mrs. Vir
ginia Westerf ield, as ushers;
Robert Stedman and staff,
lights; Warren Wolf and stu
dents, art work; and Marion
Pitman and crew, stage prep
arations. The production is given
with the joint cooperation of
Dr. Leonard Mayfield, super
intendent of schools, and Ray
Johnson, manager, KMED. Di
recting the vocal nusic groups
will be Lynn Sjolund, vocal
music supervisor.
School officials say that
scores of teen-agers and their
advisors have spent weeks in
preparation for the annual
show. The high school music
groups are well-known for
their talent, as evidenced by
their numerous invitations
and requests to perform.

The Siuslaw Oar succeeded
the "West" newspaper in
1928 when M. D. Morgan
came here from Harrisburg.
Upon death in 1952 of Lola I.
Morgan, wife of the founder,
a formal partnership was
formed between Genevieve
and Carrol Morgan and
Wayne and Leland Morgan.
They continued publication
until this week.
The Holmans purchased the
Florence News in 1958. They
said that for the present there
would be no change in basic
operations except that the two
papers would be consolidated.
