Justice Wants To
Intensify Law on
Gambling Operators
Washington- (UP!) -The Jus
tice Department wants to in
tensify its crackdown on op
erators of one-armed bandits
and other coin-operated gam
bling devices.
An FBI spokesman said the
Justice Department is seek
ing legislation to strengthen
enforcement of the anti-slots
act, passed in 1951, and to
extend the reach of the law
to include certain types of
pinball machines. The move
may be made in the January
Congress.
The spokesman said most
slot machine operations have
been effectively limited since
the launching of a federal
crackdown nearly a decade
ago. But he said further leg
islation was needed
Since enactment of the
Johnson-Preston anti-slots act,
the FBI has- seized 14,981
slot machines and won court
convictions. Highpoint in the
drive was 1952 when the FBI
seized 13,906 machines across
the nation.
Few Slots Left
An FBI spokesman said
very few localities any longer
have slot machines. Last year
only 75 such devices were
seized under the Johnson
Preston Act, which is aimed
at inter-state transportation
of coin-operated gambling de
vices. . Actually, slot machines are
not a major domestic prob
lem. Most of them are found
In Nevada, where gambling is
big business-and legal-and
Maryland, where they are per
mitted as a matter of local
umintv nntion.
But the foreign trade in
slots is another matter. Henry
Preston, a veteran in tne jus
tire deDartment's criminal di
vision, said the machines are
becoming increasingly pup"-
lar in other countries, includ
ing Japan and Germany. Only
last month, agents seized 420
slot machines consigned to
London on grounds the ship
per failed to register them for
overseas delivery.
In an effort to block such
overseas shipments, the Jus
tice Department has had to
attack the problem through
registration laws. It would
like more specific authority,
such as a law making it il
legal to ship slots in foreign
commerce.
Various Ideas
The department also has
various ideas as to how other
sections of the law could be
improved. For one thing it
would like to see Congress
pass - legislation that would
make slot machine manufac
turers maintain better busi
ness records. As it is, agents
sometimes have trouble trac
ing the machines to their man
ufacturers. Peterson said the problem
continues to plague enforce
ment officials because "there's
so much easy money involv
ed."
It doesn't strain the imag
ination to come to the con
clusion that hoodlums follow
the slots," he added.
Wherever slots exist, he
said, usually is found a great
er concentration of hoods and
resultant greater opportunities
for shakedown murders and
gangfights.

RT-248 gas turbine, designed
by The Cooper - Bessemer
Corporation, Mount Vernon,
Ohio. ,
The RT-248 is expected to
find wide use in the natural
gas. petroleum and petro
chemical industries. A vari
ation of this gas turbine is
also expected to provide elec
tric power, both for homes
and industry, and to power
ships. Plans for municipal
electric plants with this gas
,.rhine are now under study.
Less than four hours are
reeded to remove the - jut en
gine section and replace it
when necessary. Convention
al engines require weeks of
shutdown for overhaul.
