One day a woman brought
into my office a short, roly -
poly, dull-looking girl with a
pudgy face
and big bags
under her
eyes. The
mother said
the girl had
been too stu
pid to go on
with school,
and most o f
the time she
sat in a chair
Dr. Alvarez
and slept. One glance at the
girl showed that her thryoid
gland was not working, and
soon, to the great joy of every
one, as I gave her large doses
of thyroid substance, she grew
taller and thinner; she became
bright and happy, and she
went bock to school.
Another time a girl of 14
was brought in who looked
like a coarse woman, with a
round face and much black
hair around her mouth and
chin. On her abdomen were
many streaks of thin skin
such as one sees on the abodo-
mcn of a woman who has
borne several large children.
This girl had "Cushing's syn
drome," due to a little tumor
in one of her adrenal glands
just above one kidney. When
a surgeon removed it, within
a few weeks, we saw a mir
acle happen. What formerly
had looked like a homely.
stout and hairy old woman
turned into a pretty, well-
formed girl!
The next person to come
into my office was dressed as
man, and told me he had
been married and had some
children. But, of lnte, a most
embarrassing change had
taken place in him: he had
come to look like a woman;
he had developed the natural
curves of a woman and his
voice had become like that of
a woman. He said he now felt
like a woman and would like
to dress as one. When dressed
as a man, people stared at
him; they wondered what was
wrong, and they made nasty
remarks; but when he dressed
as a woman no one saw any
thing peculiar about him.
What interested me much,
and made me think a lot, was
that no one had fussed at the
two gins but the man was
soon fired from the good job
which he had held for years;
and later, when he dressed as
woman, the police black
mailed him and threatened to
put him in jail. His own fam
ily turned angrily against him
and cast him out.

And yet, from my medical

sease produced a mix-up in
his sex, he was looked on and
treated as a criminal. Why
can't we in America be kinder
and more understanding, and
why can't we change some of
our ancient and stupid laws.'
Why can't we learn to change
our point of view?
Extra Chromosome
In the last few years ex
perts have been finding that
some people are born with an
extra chromosome or an ab
normality in their sex chro
mosomes (chromosomes are
very tiny, but all-important,
particles of tissue in the nuclei
or growing centers of our
cells). Recently, Dr. Tjio dis
covered that the normal hu
man being has 46 chromo
somes. Some persons who are
born with 47 chromosomes are
likely to be "mongoloid" chil
dren or abnormal in one or
more ways. Some are feeble
minded. Some who are born
with a mix-up in their sex
chromosomes have trouble de
ciding whether they should be
male or female. Today there
is a simple test, with a micro
scope, which shows whether a
person's tissues are male or
female. Curiously, sometimes
a child who has the sex or
gans of a boy has the tissues
of a girl.
Recently, when a mongoloid
child was born into a sup
posedly normal family, the
doctors examined the father
and found he had 47 chromo
somes. This probably had
significance because today,
more and more mongoloid
children are found to have 47
chromosomes.
Aluminum Pots
Still, people keep asking
me if the use of aluminum
pots for cooking is dangerous
to health. To me, one of the
unfortunate quirks, of, the hu
man mind is that one can try
to put a correct and sensible
and useful idea into it, and
one may fail; but just mention
once, a completely silly and
crazy and false idea, and it
will immediately be accepted,
and held so firmjy by millions
of people that no one can ever
knock it out.
A good example is this idea
that food cooked in aluminum
pots will be poisonous. I
imagine millions of people
have been saying this for the
lost 40 years, in spite of
everything that the medical
profession and the U.S. Health
authorities have been able to
do to combat the idea. To me.
the simplest way of showing
how foolish the Idea is is to
point out what every druggist
knows, and this is that alumi
num is a medicine which is
given in large doses several
times a day to patients with
ulcer. Obviously, then, the
tiny traces of the metal that
can come off a pot can have
not bad effect.
